The U.S. Civil Rights Commission on Friday slammed President Trump's pardon of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
"The (Arpaio) pardon functionally endorses racial profiling and abuses of authority, contrary to the work of the hundred of thousands of hardworking law enforcement officers around the country who uphold the law," the commission said in a statement. Arpaio was convicted of criminal contempt after he defied a judge's order to stop racially profiling Latinos.
The commission also took aim at Trump's recent move to wind down DACA over the next six months.
"The decision is a tremendous blow to the personal dreams and ambitions that DREAMers have been working toward since the DACA program began in 2012. They now face a reality where they are at risk of being exploited in the workplace and deported and prevented from fully contributing to and supporting their families, communities, and country," the group said in an additional statement.
