Spanish police raids aim to halt Catalan independence vote

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A Spanish judge ordered police to search a printer's shop and two offices of a regional newspaper in Catalonia as part of an investigation into alleged preparations for an illegal referendum on independence for the prosperous northeastern region.

A Barcelona-based court said Saturday that the police searches took place Friday in the towns of Valls and Constanti in southern Catalonia. The court said the searches formed part of an investigation into possible disobedience, prevarication and the embezzlement of public funds by Catalan officials.
 
The regional Catalan newspaper El Vallenc reported that "4 agents of the Civil Guard entered our newspaper."

El Vallenc said "the search took place hours after they had searched the Indugraf business." Indugraf is a printer in Constanti.

I si vols parlar d'una Catalunya lliure, has de parlar amb molts catalans, i no solament els qui volen l'independència d'Espanya. Hi ha una discussió molt viva en aquest moment, i no tots son per una separació. Som lluny d'aixó.

3. No Entiendo El Catalan

Pero creo que dices que no todos los Catalanes son independistas. Personalmente me encanta Catalunya y el pueblo Catalán y no quiero que se separen de España. Espero que los idiotas cabezas duras de los dos gobiernos se sienten como adultos y resuelvan las diferencias y traigan de nuevo la unidad a España. He dicho!

No espero que todos lo entiendan, pero si van a empezar escribiendo aquí en catalán y en vasco, deberían entender las respuestas.

Y sí, has más o menos entendido el sentimiento de lo que decía. Yo vuelvo en España una vez al mes, más o menos, y escucho lo que dicen la gente local.

6. Well, it is, actually

I used to live in Barcelona, and with a Catalan family. If the conversation doesn't drag on for too long, I can pass for a native, although after a while, I sometimes get asked if I am originally from Mallorca. Apparently a Texas accent speaking Catalan resembles the Mallorquín dialect of Catalan, go figure. We got tutored in correct writing by a retired Catalan professor who was politically uncomfortable (this was still during the Franco era, and the fascist government didn't like lefties, sound familiar?), and he was forbidden from teaching. One of our teachers knew him, and arranged for him to make a little money on the side teaching us how to write correctly. Like Castilian, written Catalan is mostly phonetic, but has two kinds of accents, and you have to watch out for which ones go where. It has a few other oddities, too, but nothing like trying to spell in French or Polish (or English, for that matter!).

Unfortunately, my Basque is only rudimentary, as I learned what I know from a student from Bilbao who was studying in Barcelona at the same time I was.

However, if people are going to post in Catalan and Basque without translations, they should be prepared to get responded to in kind.

In the immortal words of an old (he'll be 95 in December) friend of mine: 'nuff said!
