On a party line vote, Supreme Court restores Texas Republican-drawn maps

Source: Think Progress

In a victory for Republicans, all the Republican members of the Supreme Court joined a pair of orders handed down Tuesday, staying a lower court decision which struck down two Republican-drawn districts. All four of the Court’s Democrats would have denied the stay.

Tuesday evening’s orders are the latest development in a long, winding challenge to Texas’ gerrymandered maps. You can read a summary of the many twists and turns in this case, as well as the legal issues before the Supreme Court, here.

The crux of the case is that, last month, a three-judge panel of federal judges held that two Texas congressional districts were illegally drawn — the first because it was intentionally drawn to dilute Hispanic votes, the second because it was drawn with too much reliance on race.

Texas, represented by Republican superlawyer Paul Clement, asked the Supreme Court to stay this decision, arguing that “allowing the State to continue to use [its current maps] for the 2018 elections will impose little harm,” because “if the plaintiffs ultimately prevail before this Court on appeal, a new map could still be drawn in time for the 2020 elections.”

Who picked Scalia's replacement?

BARACK OBAMA

Why isn't he on the Court right now?

Because incrementalist and centrists who abandoned OUR PRESIDENT (the one who overcame the obstacles) got their rears handed to them in the 2014 Senate elections.

Heck, if it wasn't for them, it wouldn't have even been Gorsuch who got nominated, it would have been Goodwin Liu and we wouldn't be lamenting the patently foreseeable results in these redistricting cases, we would have been celebrating the end of mandatory minimums, the end of racist immigration laws, the end of capital punishment, and MORE.

THEY cost us this seat.

the Rule of Law! Plaintiff and insurance defense attorneys know that if a plaintiff gets a big verdict in state court they won't be able to keep it.

My friend got a 1.2 million dollar verdict from a life insurance company that would not pay, it was a clean trial. With pre= judgement interest it was over $4 million dollars. After a verdict the Parties typically mediate to avoid delay and expense of appeals. The insurance companies defense attorney offered only $15,000. He was the biggest fundraiser for the all Republican State Supreme Court of the time. I knew he was sunk. After 8 years of litigation the case was remanded back to the trial court for a new trial on a completely BS reason.

The root cause of most of our problems is our system of legalized bribery for our campaign finance.

the fake prez and pals are found guilty of collusion. I wish that complicity were a crime. That would mean that 50% of the elected GOP would be going to jail as well, unless they are all pardoned of course.
McConnell is guilty of keeping the SCOTUS seat open...what is the difference between Scalia and Gorsuch?
This country is screwed for an entire generation.

I have realistically lost most of my hope that there will be real justice in this country during my lifetime. But I will not give up resisting for as long as I physically can either. The more they push us into a corner the harder I fight back. Fuck the greedy, sociopathic, hypocritical GOP.

That the GOP Koch Heritage Foundation Party has caused. I'm not as optimistic about 2018 as some people are. One election alone is not going to be enough to reverse the damage that has been done to this country. I hope the Koch roaches sleep well at night.

We may make inroads, but we will not do it all in one election. We are in for a rough time. I may not be here, but my children will have a rough road. I am glad I raised three Democrats.

The other thing that bothers me is the new grassroots organizations. I have seen these types of groups before, over a lifetime of activism. Most of the membership will dwindle if they do not get immediate gratification. I give most of these groups two to five years before they disband.

Where Yoda said "fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering". We had fear under the Bush administration with 9/11. That fear turned into the GOP's anger against Obama. Now that anger turned into pure, unfiltered hatred. That led to Trump. What comes after hate? Suffering. And What comes after suffering?

. . . arguing that “allowing the State to continue to use [its current maps] for the 2018 elections will impose little harm,” because “if the plaintiffs ultimately prevail before this Court on appeal, a new map could still be drawn in time for the 2020 elections.”

I was stupefied when they made the argument with a straight face, and I'm beyond dumbfounded that members of the highest court in the land would even consider such an argument, let alone accept it. Not only do we have politicians in robes, we have politicians in robes who are no longer shy about proclaiming that they are politicians in robes.

and there is some truth them, particularly abandoning BHO while he was POTUS.

However, the primary root of the problem is this country is dumb as fuck, and that was LONG before 1/3 of the country voted for 45 and another 1/3 could not be bothered to vote at all.

Republicans have been rat fucking this country my entire adult life, at least, going back to the early late 80s. At some point you would think this country would WTFU and punish them.

But, their indulgence of their fuck wittery has only gotten more pervasive over time.

Every so often, we have brief moments of sanity – but generally only when things hit rock bottom.

Getting rid of slavery took a 4-year civi war that killed 750,000 Americans.

Electing FDR and passing basic economic regulations and social welfare programs took the entire economy crashing and falling into a depression.

Electing Obama took 8 years of the (formerly) worst president ever destroying the economy and bankrupting us in a war based on lies.

etc.
