Senator says he nearly has the votes for ObamaCare repeal

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) is predicting he will win enough votes to pass his last ditch ObamaCare repeal and replacement bill through the Senate, despite the long odds he seems to be facing.
I am pretty confident well get there on the Republican side, Cassidy told a group of reporters in his office on Friday. Were probably at 48-49 [votes] and talking to two or three more.
The problem for Senate Republicans when it comes to ObamaCare repeal has always been getting the final few votes to put them over the top. The repeal legislation that failed in July got 49 votes, but fell short because three senators bucked leadership and voted no.
There is an extremely short window to pass the bill before a procedural deadline of Sept. 30. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Friday announced his opposition, saying the bill kept too much of ObamaCare. Cassidy said that if the bill does not pass by Sept. 30, he would try again in the future.

(26,049 posts)He knows this is their one and only opportunity because not one Dem will vote for his kill the poor and grandma too bill. After 9/30, they have no chance in hell of repealing Obamacare. If they do get this passed by 9/30, things get very interesting in a really bad way. Will enough poor Drumpf voters realize they are losing their healthcare and bail on Repugs to make a difference in the mid-terms when this won't take effect until 2020? With all the takeaways they are currently doing to Obamacare, they could be undercutting their own sneakiness and making people feel the pain earlier, like before the mid-terms. What horrible inhumans inhabit the far right.

(168,681 posts)although a bunch of them tend to do that (I remember when Arlen Specter used to do it too and would wait until "prime time" to cast his vote for the benefit of the CSPAN2-viewing audience). They will look around and see who else is voting the same way and if there is a chance for passage without them, then they will almost always "go rogue" (because it's meaningless).
That last vote was a unique one given the gravity of it, although the outcome still offered more bang for their buck, but also assured the expectation for them to party-line vote in all other cases to quickly regain GOP street cred.
