GOP eying 'blue slip' break to help Trump fill the courts

Momentum is building in the Senate for doing away with an arcane rule that allows senators to block some of President Trumps judicial nominees.
The blue-slip rule a precedent upheld by Senate tradition allows a home-state senator to stop a lower-court nominee by refusing to return a sheet of paper, known as a blue slip, to the Judiciary Committee.
Conservatives have clamored for months to get rid of the rule, arguing Democrats are abusing the process to block qualified nominees.
They recently gained a powerful ally: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), at least when it comes to picks for the U.S. courts of appeals.

(9,287 posts)LMAO- unmasking the fraud that is the GOP conservative.
If there is a Senate rule they can break, they will.
Hypocrites and fraudsters inhabit the GOP-they are the dead soul of American politics

(35,274 posts)Notice that McConnell is what (D) wanted Leahy to be like. Leahy, in some ways, was more conservative in sticking to tradition, because he perceived that while the tradition may hurt his cause in 2014 the tradition would make up for it by helping their cause in later years.
In being more conservative, Leahy was also thinking more long range.
In condemning current (R) we automatically condemn by implication the (D) who wanted to trash the same rule in 2014.
I'm fine with that.

(23,159 posts)they are neo-fascist reactionaries. Actually, I don't believe they were ever conservatives*; they've always been neo-fascist reactionaries.
(*they are only conservatives in the sense that they seek to conserve wealth for the wealthy, power for the powerful, poverty for the impoverished, and sickness (or death) for the sick.)

(114 posts)I know what you say sounds like the right thing to do, but the GOP needs to be reminded that some day the shoe will be on the other foot and that foot can kick too.

(47,953 posts)the GOP is all in favor of getting rid of rules when they are in power. I am willing to bet that they will suddenly want all these rules back the moment they lose power.
