Maria, Now a Hurricane, Promises More Damage for the Caribbean

Source: NBC News

Watches and warnings were in effect for several Caribbean islands Sunday as Tropical Storm Maria reached hurricane status, threatening more devastation for regions already devastated by Hurricane Irma earlier this month.

Maria was about 140 miles east-northeast of Barbados with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph at 5 p.m. ET, the NHC said.

"Strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours," it said.

Hurricane conditions are possible by Monday night or Tuesday in Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten and St. Martin, St. Barts and Anguilla, according to the NHC.

She's in her early 80's and lives by herself in San Juan, ever since her husband died 6 years ago. We were going to visit her this spring when our daughter is on spring break so she can see her great-grandmother again, and so our daughter can finally experience her culture more.

Now I might just be spending the family vacation swinging a hammer to rebuild at this rate.

If the Sahara had vegetation today, there would be fewer hurricanes claims Professor David Wright of Seoul International University. Eight thousands of years ago it had lush plant life and animals which were lost due to environmental and social changes.
Many experts claim the environment of the Sahara Desert influences the formation of hurricanes, and if there were more vegetation in that region, there might be fewer hurricanes hitting the east coast of the US...
