Trump makes a comeback in the polls

Source: MSN/The Hill

President Trump's historically low job approval rating has been on the rise in recent weeks, giving the president a boost as the White House works to repeal ObamaCare and pass tax reform. Trump's job approval rating is still historically low for this point in a first-term presidency, and the latest surveys show only modest improvement, rather than a dramatic spike.

But the upward trend reverses a months-long slide that was punctuated by countless developments around the Russia investigations and intraparty feuding with GOP leaders. Trump's equivocal response to the racially charged violence in Charlottesville, Va. in mid-August had tangible negative political consequences for Trump and appears to have dragged him to the low point of his presidency so far.

But Trump's attention to the hurricanes that have battered the Gulf region and the return of Republicans that abandoned him over his response to white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Va. have helped him change course, analysts say, laying the groundwork for the White House to build on that momentum if it can get tax reform across the finish line.

"These tragedies with the storms that hit have hit Florida and Louisiana and Texas and Puerto Rico - Trump's attention to those matters and his continued attention to the recovery has brought him higher marks with voters in those states and nationally," said John McLaughlin, a GOP pollster who advised the Trump campaign. "He won a polarizing presidential race, so you won't see him bounce higher. It will have to be a positive grind upward."

As noted before, Trump has proposed drastic cuts in FEMA's budget to fund his wall and tax cuts to the rich. Still, in the meantime, Trump is happy to take credit for President Obama's efforts to make FEMA more effective.

FEMA’s Hurricane Response Is Making Trump Look Good. Thanks, Obama.

WASHINGTON ― As President Donald Trump basks in positive assessments of his handling of hurricanes Harvey and Irma, he might consider two words to help explain things: “Thanks, Obama.”

While he’s at it, he could probably also thank the so-called “deep state” and offer a wave of gratitude out the window of Air Force One over Gainesville, Florida ― home of former FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate ― as he flies to Naples, the site of much of Irma’s devastation, on Thursday. Because while Trump has enjoyed praise from frequent critics for his leadership during the storms, two of his favorite nemeses are making his job a lot easier.

Then-President Barack Obama appointed Fugate to turn around the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the system he left behind is the one Trump inherited heading into this year’s hurricane season.

“Trump’s riding on the shoulders of Obama,” said James Fraser, a Vanderbilt University professor who has done research on disaster mitigation. “It’s heartening to know that in this case, the Trump administration is not trying to undo something the Obama administration did to help people.”

to teeter back and forth as to whether you approve of dump's performance as president? At least his die-hard supporters have their unchanging enthusiasm. How can you be convinced by what he's done recently that well, you guess he's really OK? The new iteration of dumpcare? The disastrous acts of Zinke and Pruitt?

Maybe they have Stockholm syndrome already--as long as he doesn't blow everything up, they are grateful.

Oh, yeah, and he's coasting off Obama's economy, FEMA, healthcare program, etc. etc. etc. Given time they will all be wrecked and turned into smoldering ruins.

Geez, there are some very stupid people out there.

And I'm in Indiana on evacuation.

And P.S. - They laugh even harder at Pence!

BTW, while here temporarily, I attended the Indiana State Fair and the Springfield Ohio Antiques Fair (HUGE) and never saw ONE MAGA hat or shirt. And I was looking!!

So poop on your comeback.

Plus the nice weather (outside of the hurricane-ravaged spots), and hence people's moods ... is a bit more light.

There's distractions, basically. Which gives you a small % of 'malleable' people who'll flip 'positive' when asked a general poll question about 'hows the President doing' ... that's all it is.

Looking at 538's aggregate, I don't see anything that looks remarkebly different than the typical rises and falls that accompanied his downward trajectory all year.

In my opinion, many media outlets make too many dramatic claims based on very short term data, ignoring the long term and margins of error.
