Mexican authorities conclude no child trapped in collapsed school

BREAKING: Mexican officials conclude there is no child still buried at Mexico City school after earthquake, in surprise twist to national drama.

MEXICO CITY — A sprawling earthquake recovery effort spanning several states turned intensely personal Thursday as rescue crews struggled to save a 12-year-old girl who was pinned in the rubble of her elementary school.

The drama played out live late Wednesday and Thursday on the major news channels here, with television cameras tracking every movement of the Mexican navy personnel and others who sought to rescue the girl now known as “Frida Sofia.” Under a soft rain, the work was delicate and painstaking, relying on thermal cameras and other technology to try to locate and remove young children trapped for more than 30 hours after their school collapsed Tuesday afternoon.

At one point Wednesday night in a drama that has riveted Mexicans, Televisa reporter Danielle Dithurbide learned from the navy admiral leading the recovery effort that Frida Sofia — which may not be her real name — was able to tell rescuers that five other students were possibly trapped with her. It was unclear whether they were alive.

4. Mexico Navy Official: No Missing Child At Collapsed School From Deadly Quake

A high-ranking navy official said Thursday there is no missing child at a collapsed Mexico City school that had become a focus of rescue efforts following this week’s deadly magnitude 7.1 earthquake, though an adult still may be alive in the rubble.

Navy Assistant Secretary Angel Enrique Sarmiento said that while there are blood traces and other signs suggesting that someone is alive, all the school’s children have been accounted for.

“We have done an accounting with school officials and we are certain that all the children either died, unfortunately, are in hospitals or are safe at their homes,” Sarmiento said.

The attention of many in Mexico and abroad had been drawn to the plight of a girl identified only as Frida Sofia, who was said to have been located alive under the pancaked school building and became a symbol for the hopes of thousands of rescuers working around the clock in search of quake survivors.

it's fucking SICK. MSNBC was interviewing the workers, so if it was a hoax, everyone was in on it. Hard to believe.

I thought it was strange that not much information was available about her because she had a working cell phone. I suspected a hoax early on, but still hoped there were some survivors to be rescued.
