Nashville police are responding to a shooting that injured multiple people at a church in Antioch.

At around 11:15 a.m., police began receiving calls that multiple shots were fired with people shot at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, according to a dispatcher.

One person was killed and eight others were wounded during a shooting at a church in Antioch, Tennessee, on Sunday morning.

Joseph Pleasant, a spokesman for the Nashville Fire Department, told NBC News that nine people were shot at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch and that one person was confirmed dead.

Police were still investigating the shooting at 3890 Pin Hook Road in Antioch, a spokeswoman with the Metro Nashville Police Department told NBC News.

Shooter is in custody. He got shot during a fight with one of the ushers, but it was a lady walking to her car in the parking lot that was killed.

...The first call reporting multiple gunshots came in around 11:15 a.m. CT, police spokesman Don Aaron said. The gunman shot Melanie Smith, 39, as church was letting out before entering the church with two pistols and continuing to shoot.

Suspect Emanuel Kidega Samson, 25, was hospitalized for gunshot wounds and released to police custody. He will be charged with murder and attempted murder, Aaron said.

...A church usher identified as 22-year-old Robert Engle saw the shooting and confronted the gunman, Aaron said. During a struggle, the gunman mistakenly shot himself.

...Samson is believed to be a legal US resident, though not necessarily a citizen, who arrived in the United States in 1996 from Sudan, Aaron said.

It's a mixed race church, so my first thought was this was a white shooter, but apparently the shooter was black guy from Sudan.

The usher apparently had a concealed handgun, although he did not shoot the shooter.
