GOP bill will offer Dreamers citizenship after extreme vetting

Source: Sacramento Bee

Sen. Thom Tillis will introduce his “conservative Dream Act” on Monday that would provide a pathway to citizenship for as many as 2.5 million young undocumented immigrants, but one that is long and involves “extreme vetting.”

The North Carolina Republican and cosponsor James Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican, will pitch the plan as “merit-based” relief that must be earned — and, critically, not “amnesty,” according to Republican talking points obtained by McClatchy. But unlike other merit-based immigration proposals that limit new immigrants from entering the country based on their job skills, this proposal would limit who can remain in the country based on their years of American education, work experience or military service.

“Choosing between either mass deportation of Dreamers or blanket amnesty is a false choice,” the lawmakers argue, according to the talking points. “There is a third option: an organized process by which talented and hard-working young Americans can earn legal status.”

All applicants will have to pass a medical examination and be “extreme vetted.” The vetting will include three separate rounds of security and background checks to ensure they have no criminal history and pose no national security threat. The first check would happen when the immigrant enters the program followed by a second check after five years. The third check comes after 15 years, if and when the immigrant applies to become a citizen.

Note the "health" check...so anyone w/ health issues are a problem. Cherry picking much ?

This just adds two new points where they are again assessed. This is far more than happens with legal immigrants, but it does allow them to live and work openly and legally - as under the Obama executive order and - cumbersome as it is, it allows a path to citizenship as the Dream Act did. For a Republican bill, this is not that bad.

But 15 years to vet someone who has already been here for 10 or 20 years is absurd.

They're going to get a medical checkup to see if they picked up any diseases in their 20 years in the US? That's humiliating and embarrassing. They could waive that for long-timers.

Man, if they did a background check on every citizen, they'd have to deport like 1/3 of the country. How about we deport people with illegal guns, citizen or not?

Crazy Thom is too much of a coward to say what he really thinks....Dreamers are brown and should get the hell out because they're brown. At least the nut jobs in Charlottesville were open about their insane beliefs. The rest, like Tillis, hide behind a bunch of BS rhetoric.

Remember, the rabid GOP base wants them all gone yesterday. So this another crack in the GOP coalition, another place where the Dems can offer a better plan while the Repubs fight amongst themselves.

The word "vetting" implies that people are animals. Extreme vetting? Jesus. People make mistakes when they're kids. That's why we have sealed records.

Sep 2017

We can call it THE PANGAIA PLAN or not.. doesn't matter.

ALL REPUBLICANS
IF they wish to remain in this country must pass a merit-based relief review based on-

1- job skills
2- Years of American education
3- Work experience
4- Military service
4- Talent
5- PROVEN ability to work hard
6- Young of age
7- Pass a medical exam
8- Extreme vetting- and I mean REALLY, REALLY extreme
9- Three rounds of security and background checks over a 15 year period to ensure they have no criminal history and pose no national security threat.

If, after 15 years they can successfully fulfill all these requirements, they can still go fuck themselves.

Anybody want to be a co-sponsor?

There is a difference. Immigrants have always had to meet certain standards when coming to America that Americans don't have to. And to become American citizens, they have to pass a history test that many Americans couldn't pass.

You can't be sick and emigrate to Canada or some other countries. That's pretty standard. Unless it's some mercy thing or hardship thing, and it doesn't cost the govt.

Although I think extreme vetting and 15 years is ridiculous. I wouldn't come out of the shadows for just the mere chance of becoming a citizen 15 years down the road.
