Hurricanes Irma and Maria inflicted widespread damage and island-wide power outages in Puerto Rico, potentially threatening more than 3 million American citizens. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) said Monday that Congress is working with the Trump administration to ensure necessary resources get to the U.S. territory.
Miranda, whose parents were born in Puerto Rico, wrote on Twitter on Sunday that hes reaching out to every famous Puerto Rican singer I know and several I dont to raise money to help with hurricane relief efforts.
The 37-year-old Broadway veteran has been an outspoken critic of Trump. Earlier this month, he visited Capitol Hill to lobby lawmakers to preserve federal arts and humanities funding.

(16,904 posts)If every small town in the U.S. adopted a family in a hurricane ravaged place. Take up donations for 1 family. Focus all donations on getting that family stable, with food, cleaning supplies, communication, power, water, and then get the home repaired, household items replaced, whatever is needed.
This is a massive idea. I don't even know if it could be done.
I am willing to take in one or 2 people, such as older folks, kids over 5, pregnant Moms, people who might be better off letting someone else do the work. I have a spare room, and while my house isn't big, it is comfy. And is somewhat accessible (ramp, handhold in the bath, 1 floor plan)

(47,277 posts)see Puerto Ricans as "real Americans". As such, it is hard to elicit any real concern or compassion from him. Okay, it is impossible to elicit "compassion" from him over anyone other than himself, but he can fake it for mainland white folks.

Just trying to think of reasons why a Republican might want to help suffering US citizens who are brown and liberal.

(45,380 posts)so if they ever get statehood we would get another reliably blue state
Their population is over 3 million so they are larger than many US states

(45,380 posts)so Republicans would never allow them to become a state. Also they've voted against it on referendums. They have benefits from remaining a territory like no federal income tax, only payroll tax.

(4,940 posts)Even if it's only an old blanket, canned goods, bottled water - I'm 5K miles away and we still loaded 2 planes for Puerto Rico alone! And we are NOT a rich wealthy community.

(32,594 posts)I'm a regular contributor to Brother's Brother Foundation because they're an awesome organization. Many of them are volunteer doctors, nurses and health professionals who get on planes and fly to the affected areas to help people in need. They also bring food, water, medicines, clothing and anything they can get donated on short notice.
This foundation is based in Pittsburgh and they provide relief to places like Haiti, Mexico, African countries, South American countries, or wherever disasters happen. If you want to get involved they need volunteers, money and "in kind" donations, if you have food or medicines to give. Almost all of donated moneys (95%) go to help the people in need.
They're currently sending volunteers and supplies to Puerto Rico, and I sure this will be a long-term project for them.
Please help if you can.
