Target raises minimum hourly wage to $11, pledges $15 by end of 2020

Source: Reuters

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Target Corp said on Monday it would increase its minimum hourly wage this year by a dollar to $11, vowing to raise this by the end of 2020 to $15 an hour -- the so-called "living wage" labor advocates across the United States are campaigning for.

The Minneapolis-based retailer, which plans to start hiking minimum pay across its stores to $11 an hour in October, provided assurances that the move would not hurt its previously announced full-year and quarterly earnings forecasts.

Amid increasing competition for workers in a strengthening labor market, the "Fight for Fifteen" movement -- a union-led push for a $15 minimum wage -- has been gaining traction in cities across the country. Target's decision comes less than three months after the Minneapolis City Council approved a measure requiring large companies to pay workers least at $15 an hour by 2022, following decisions by other liberal-leaning U.S. cities to raise the minimum wage.

The retailer, which employs more than more than 323,000 people, said the $11 hourly wage would also apply to the more than 100,000 workers Target is hiring for the holiday season.

The conservatives will take their business to Wal-Mart where workers can still be demeaned for being on food stamps.

I worked at Wally World about twenty years ago and that was enough to permanently turn me off Wal-Mart.

The conservatives can go fuck themselves.

The grocery store where I shop about a year ago start posting help needed signs advertising starting pay of $9.00 an hour. That is up to $10.25 now. Companies don't hike wages 15% out of the goodness of their heart. I suspect they are having difficulty keeping staffed.

It would have been about 2003-2004 at a new Super Target that was just opening. Her starting wage back then was 2.00+ per hr more than MW. Hell we have Quik Trips here that start out at $10.00 per hour. We got a CostCo a few years back that started people at $11.00 or 12.00 per hour.

Companies CAN pay that much and still make profit out the wazoo. Many don't want to because they like employee's under their thumb and not thinking for themselves.

So basically... FUCK YOU WALMART!

Since the Walton heirs own 51% of the stock, whatever they say goes. The fact that their net worth is $145 BILLION while their employees are the biggest recipients of SNAP, housing assistance, Medicaid, etc. is beyond obscene. They can't blame their low wages on pressure from the shareholders be cause they ARE the shareholders.

On the other hand, there are no breaks during your shift. I'm not sure how they get away with that though.
