Zinke: One-third of Interior employees not loyal to Trump
Source: Associated Press
By MATTHEW DALY
Today
WASHINGTON (AP) Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said Monday that nearly one-third of employees at his department are not loyal to him and President Donald Trump, adding that he is working to change the departments regulatory culture to be more business friendly.
Zinke, a former Navy SEAL, said he knew when he took over the 70,000-employee department in March that, I got 30 percent of the crew thats not loyal to the flag.
In a speech to an oil industry group, Zinke compared Interior to a pirate ship that captures a prized ship at sea and only the captain and the first mate row over to finish the mission. We do have good people at Interior, he said, but the direction has to be clear and youve got to hold people accountable.
Zinkes comments echo complaints by some White House allies that a permanent, deep state in Washington has sabotaged Trumps efforts to remake the government.

(15,205 posts)The people he's been appointing are wreckers, not builders, and civil servants are generally quite dedicated to their careers and proud of the services they provide. Then you get some asshole appointee in there who is an ideologue who doesn't want to actually govern and lead, but instead wants to destroy what has been built, pull it apart brick by brick, and guess what? Those civil servants will quietly hamper every effort to do that. After all, if you've worked in a system for years, know the good that it does, and believe in what it and you are doing each day, are you going to allow some ignorant asshole (and Trump's appointees are ALL ignorant assholes) rip it down?

(16,573 posts)No Mr. Zinke, you are wrong. 100 percent of DOI employees are loyal to the United States. Fewer than 30% are loyal to Trump and his/your "flag".
There is no deep State unless you call reasonable, prudent, thoughtful, educated and honest professionals a deep State. Fuck off madmen!

(To be totally fair, I'm not sure if it's not the AP and/or other reporters that are assuming pirates here, while Zinke might be thinking more along the lines of Hornblower etc. who also talk about "prize ships" (no 'd'). There doesn't seem to be a longer direct quote anywhere yet)

You also cant come in an install 70000 new republican employees just because they dont kiss your ass.

I say three cheers for the folks that have probably been with the department for many years for not getting behind this horrid administration.

(16,629 posts)None of the federal employees should be loyal to him or to his draft dodging pal in the White House! Their loyalty should be to the country, to the Constitution, not to a thief like Zinke, or a conman like Trump!!!

(7,472 posts)I won't judge him as I don't know enough about him thru his public statements.
But for the president he has done NOTHING to earn the respect. He spent the weekend Tweeting about NFL players while failing to even start to address the needs of Puerto Rico an American Territory.
The president acts like a grade school play ground bully while Americans in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico are suffering from hurricane damage all around them.
He has not earned my respect or the respect of two thirds of the America people.

(6,249 posts)using scarce resources to monitor employees' email and perhaps even phone calls, looking for signs of "disloyalty".
I know that employees in another Federal Department early on in this regime got the message--literally--that the new admin was scanning their emails for 5 key words--trump, 2020, election, and 2 more I can't remember now. Of course Federal civil servants are not supposed to engage in politicking while on the job, but the dumpster's intent was clearly to cow and intimidate employees they knew were horrified at the new regime.
