Iceberg 4 times the size of Manhattan breaks off Antarctica
Source: USA Today
A 103-square-mile chunk of ice has broken off Antarctica, the latest chunk of massive ice to leave the continent.
For comparison, Manhattan is 22.7 square miles a quarter of the size.
The Washington Post reports the iceberg disconnected from Pine Island Glacier, a part of West Antarctica that already loses 45 billion tons of ice annually, contributing to sea level rises.
The break comes two months after a 2,200 square-mile piece of ice detached from Antarctica in July. At nearly the size of Delaware, the iceberg was one of the largest ever recorded. In 2014, a 255-square-mile iceberg also calved from Antarctica

(12,157 posts)The pieces can be as dangerous as the whole and then they are scattered over a wider field.

(22,031 posts)First, it's early Spring in Antarctica. It's dark and cold and stormy.
Second, the icebergs are really big. Trying to tow them through some of the world's most dangerous waters is technically very complex.
Lastly, it would be prohibitively expensive.
Or was your comment meant in jest?

(5,523 posts)Had some 2,000 year-old ice in my rum and coke in the EM club. No data was ruined. There were damaged discarded cores. Meanwhile cracks appeared in the permanent ice shelf at McMurdo. Today GOOGLE Earth shows open water in the Summer where we drove and landing strips were maintained.
