As the devastation from Hurricane Maria became more apparent Sunday, former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton implored President Trump and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to help the people of Puerto Rico. Send the Navy, she tweeted, especially the hospital ship USNS Comfort.

Two days later, Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Brock Long announced that the Navy will soon do exactly that. The decision, announced in front of the White House on Tuesday afternoon, was not later confirmed by the Navy. It comes after days of critics saying that the U.S. government isn’t doing enough to support hurricane relief in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory of nearly 3.5 million people that faces months without electricity and a long rebuilding process.

Navy Cmdr. Mike Kafka said that the ship will leave within the next four days, and it will take five additional days to reach Puerto Rico. He called the move a “prudent decision in light of current conditions on ground.”....................

Sure am glad to see the Comfort is on its way to PR.

I can imagine that Trump will have a cow when he sees this headline. Get ready for some more crooked Hillary tweets

If 45* had half a brain he'd have had the Navy pre-position these ships a safe distance away so that they could have been on the scene ASAP. Thinking ahead isn't one of 45*s strong suits, it seems.

The military has many assets that would be of great use in Puerto Rico right now. Engineers, police, health, supplies, ect..

If sent before it hit, they could have been damaged by the storm as well.

first off, when not deployed they only have a skeleton crew so it takes at least a week to prepare to get underway. Secondly, the medical staff is not permanently embarked so it takes some time to identify them and have them travel from all over America. And then they have to load all the necessary supplies.

The Navy had to wait for tasking from FEMA.

https://www.navytimes.com/news/your-military/2017/09/26/hospital-ship-comfort-heading-to-puerto-rico/

FEMA may have waited to make sure Maria would miss the East Coast, and weaken. The 5 am Wednesday advisory placed Maria 145 miles east of Cape Hatteras. There are high seas warnings still out for the offshore area.

As of yesterday (see above), the Comfort was still docked in Norfolk, and the Navy said it would get underway within 96 hours ((some things never change)).

By the way, a few years ago a number of the staff at NH Portsmouth and NMC Bethesda (now "Walter Reed&quot were identified as assets to staff the Comfort when deployed. Service may wind up being reduced at some land facilities.
