White House is restricting lawmakers from visiting Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, aides say

The Trump administration is restricting lawmakers in both parties from visiting storm-ravaged Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands aboard military aircraft this weekend in order to keep focused on recovery missions there, according to multiple congressional aides. ... The decision comes as the Pentagon is intensifying its relief efforts on the islands as the U.S. government struggles to respond to devastation caused last week by Hurricane Maria and earlier by Hurricane Irma.
{Dear Government: Send in troops to Puerto Rico. This catastrophe demands it.}
Multiple attempts have been underway in recent days for members of both parties to travel to Puerto Rico aboard military aircraft. Once there, they would have met with officials with the military and Federal Emergency Management Agency responsible for ongoing missions on the ground.
At least 10 members of the House and Senate were hoping to go this Friday, according to two aides. Another trip of senators and House lawmakers would have gone on Sunday, said the aides, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the planning. ... But since Monday evening, permission to use military aircraft to make the trips has been denied by the White House and Pentagon, the aides said. One Republican aide familiar with the back-and-forth said that the administration and military officials had indicated that they need resources for rescue and recovery, thus member travel will be restricted.
Trump said at a news conference on Monday that he would be traveling to Puerto Rico next Tuesday and may also visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, adding that he was told that is the earliest day he could do so without hampering ongoing relief missions.

(25,240 posts)therefore he wants to make it to PR before any other lawmakers get there and tell the truth as to what is going on there.
The worst thing that can happen to Trump is that a Dem gets to PR and gets in front of the camera and tells the American People how Trump is screwing up with this.

(24,259 posts)his brand & his ego. He's afraid that them going first would steal some of his spotlight.
From what I've seen, he's way to self absorbed in his (mistaken) perception of his own perfection to think he's failed with Puerto Rico and since his handlers only tell him he's doing a great job and feed him warm fuzzy news and praise he thinks things are going beautifully there.

(8,445 posts)At the same time, I think all resources that these lawmakers want to expend for these trips should go toward getting fuel and needed supplies there. I'm not just talking about the trips they want to take to Puerto Rico, but also these many trips all over the damned place.
I wish that when 45 goes there next Tuesday that they'd just drop him by helicopter in one of the areas where people are in the most desperate situation. And, you know, leave his ass there and bring out someone who is in a life or death situation instead.
Oh, and maybe when 45 goes there next Tuesday he could also bring along that approximately $33 million for the failed Trump golf course there. He bragged during the campaign that he had $11 billion, so it shouldn't hurt him too much to peel off some funds for Puerto Ricans. Greedy bastard.

(22,048 posts)Kind of the angle I'm coming from too. They've all seen the pictures, the video, the coverage. They don't need to go there to see how devastated it is. And it's not like they can do much there to help while there.
They can leverage a lot more power to get food, medicine, water, everything from their offices in the States. Work the phone, email, texts, get gears in motion in a serious manner. Heck, in PR right now power is still mostly out, cell phone coverage is down or spotty at best. They would be off the grid there.

(341 posts)He is intentionally TRYING to kill these poor people. I think he's that sick. That twisted. That disgusting. That much a waste of oxygen, resources, and space. That toxic orange shit-stain is pure evil incarnate. He's not trying to hide anything- he's taking this opportunity to kill off a few million brown people without actually dropping a bomb on them.
