UPDATED: San Juan mayor calls on Trump to do more to help Puerto Rico

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 09/29/17 08:48 AM EDT

The mayor of San Juan on Friday called on President Trump to continue to ramp up the federal government's assistance to Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Irma, urging an island-wide approach to the relief efforts.

Carmen Yulín Cruz said on CNN's "New Day" that, while she appreciated Trump's call to San Juan, there are "77 other towns waiting" for a response from the president.

"They're waiting anxiously and will be very grateful to you and to the American people if you continue to step up to the moral imperative that you've taken on all over the world to help those in need," she said. "So help us."

"And I know he can do it, because he did it yesterday with San Juan. Somebody heard me, and they just came to San Juan and things started moving and rolling. But this has to happen on a continuous basis with the entire island of Puerto Rico."

UPDATE:

San Juan mayor tears into Trump DHS chief: 'This is not a good news story'

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 09/29/17 08:57 AM EDT

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz on Friday morning ripped into Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke for calling the government's Puerto Rico response a "good news story."

After hearing Duke's comments, Cruz told CNN it was "irresponsible" to spin the island's devastation so positively.

“Maybe from where she’s standing, it’s a good news story,” the mayor said. “When you’re drinking from a creek, it’s not a good news story. When you don’t have food for a baby, it’s not a good news story.”

Cruz said that as the devastation continues to worsen, people are scrambling to find food, especially in rural areas where supplies are not able to reach as easily.

“Damnit, this is not a good news story,” she said. “This is a people-are-dying story.”

Trump Hurricane Flack Gets Torched by San Juan Mayor: 'This Is Not a Good News Story, Dammit!'

BY TOMMY CHRISTOPHER

As President Donald Trump's administration continues to try and catch up to the devastation in Puerto Rico, its public posture has been a sickening focus on avoiding blame and generating good press. That effort rightfully backfired Friday morning when San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz blasted a Trump official for calling Hurricane Maria's aftermath a “good news story.”

. . .

This is a story of a devastation that continues to worsen because people are not getting food and water. If I could scream it a lot more louder, it's not a good news story when people are dying when they don't have dialysis, and when the generators aren't working and the oxygen is not providing for them. Where is there good news here?"
