AP sources: US cuts embassy staff, urges no travel to Cuba

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is warning Americans against visiting Cuba and ordering more than half of U.S. personnel to leave the island, senior officials said Friday, in a dramatic response to what they described as “specific attacks” on diplomats.

The decision deals a blow to already delicate ties between the U.S. and Cuba, longtime enemies who only recently began putting their hostility behind them. The embassy in Havana will lose roughly 60 percent of its U.S. staff, and will stop processing visas in Cuba indefinitely, the American officials said.

In a new travel warning to be issued Friday, the U.S. will say some of the attacks have occurred in Cuban hotels, and that while American tourists aren’t known to have been hurt, they could be exposed if they travel to Cuba. Tourism is a critical component of Cuba’s economy that has grown in recent years as the U.S. relaxed restrictions.

Almost a year after diplomats began describing unexplained health problems, U.S investigators still don’t know what or who is behind the attacks, which have harmed at least 21 diplomats and their families, some with injuries as serious as traumatic brain injury and permanent hearing loss. Although the State Department has called them “incidents” and generally avoided deeming them attacks, officials said Friday the U.S. now has determined there were “specific attacks” on American personnel in Cuba.

Cubans seeking visas to enter the U.S. may be able to apply through embassies in nearby countries, officials said. The U.S. will also stop sending official delegations to Cuba, though diplomatic discussions will continue in Washington.

I am wondering how it will play out and who will be found ultimately responsible.

We had read that we should take some small items like toiletries to give away and we did. They were much appreciated. Reading glasses, soap, toothbrushes, stuff like that. $30 at the dollar store and it's like gold to them. Doctors and teachers make about $40 a month. The only people who do better are those who work with cash- taxi drivers, waiters. They can sometimes get away with not reporting all their tips.

We avoided the water but I got sick anyway. One dinner we had was with fish and a salad so we think it was one of those rinsed in tap water. Take some immodium with you. I'm still not back to 100%.

You don't have to change your currency at the airport (avoid that long line). Our hotel changed ours same fee as at the airport. Taxi driver will take US dollars to get you there.

You can buy a card with a code on it to access the internet. $2 for an hour. Still slow and limited range in the hotspots though.

Raul Castro's response to the incident was shaken. He even invited the FBI to come to look in to it (which is extraordinary given the relations). Apparently they have evidence the attack occurred (like actual recordings). So it wasn't just paranoid diplomats, they were actively being targeted by someone.

If you want a truly crazy conspiracy theory: CIA / US intel has taken a beating under Obama (Benghazi, Manning, repeated intel leaks), and to get into the Presidential graces, they attacked the diplomats so that Trump's involvement with Cuba could be lessened and in to Trump's good graces.

Then again, it could've really just been some old soviet left Cubans who wanted to give the diplomats a hard time as a grudge against the US electing Trump but didn't think they'd get caught.

But Raul's response to it makes me think it was definitely not sanctioned by him or anyone at the top.

Cuba must be keeping a very close eye on American embassy and diplomats. You'd think they would be on top of weird things or unknown people being around them.

This is quite a mystery.

There is the possibility that a rogue element was coerced by Russia to do some shenanigans.

It almost certainly didn't come from the top though because Raul Castro's response was very uncharacteristic of a defiant Cuba, he invited the FBI to look in to it, which is really unheard of.

He thought the Cubans attacked our diplomats because of Trump and that was the correct thing for a country that is "civilized" to do. I pointed out the attack came when Obama was president. As far as the Russians, nothing in Cuba happens without Cuban Intelligence knowing. So either the Cubans attacked our diplomats or they know who did.
