Trump attacks nasty San Juan mayor and accuses Puerto Rico workers of being lazy in vicious tweet frenzy
Tom Boggioni30 Sep 2017 at 07:40 ET
President Donald Trump launched an early morning Twitter attack on the mayor of San Juan, saying she is being manipulated by the Democratic Party, and told to be nasty to him.
He followed that up by blaming her leadership for the slowness in repairs, while calling Puerto Rican workers lazy who want everything done for them.
Throughout Friday, Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz made multiple appeals to mainland U.S. citizens that people are dying in Puerto Rico, and was mildly critical of the president for not sending more help to the U.S. territory that was ravaged by a hurricane.
Later in the day, Cruz ramped up her appeal, specifically addressing Trump, saying, We are not as second-class citizens, but as animals that can be disposed of.

(3,764 posts)why aren't we using military transport helicopters to transport supplies if they can't be moved by truck because the roads are destroyed?

(8,445 posts)It's because the Democrats told the San Juan mayor to be "nasty" to Trump and because of "poor leadership" in Puerto Rico and because the "people of Puerto Rico are lazy". It, of course, has nothing to do with the ineptitude of this administration.
But, yes, great point.

(50,553 posts)Most of the shipping containers you see going down the road on trucks in the US are filled with one thing. That won't work in a disaster because you have to break down the containers when they get to the port and split up the contents, and you really don't want to take the time to do that. What you want to do is design a Standard Aid Package. We'll say the aid package will weigh 45,000 pounds and it'll have water, blankets, food, medical supplies. sanitation supplies... and then you pack each container accordingly. When you get it to the disaster area, you stick it on a truck, haul it to a community, set it on the ground and let the people it's going to break it down.
There is not one helicopter in the US inventory that can lift a 40-foot high-cube with 45,000 pounds of materiel in it. What we need to send down there, RIGHT FUCKING NOW!, is Army Palletized Load System trucks - which are designed to load and unload a 40-foot container without the use of a crane. They're based on a truck Oshkosh makes that has tires that come up to your shoulder blades and are two feet wide. That rig doesn't have any need for roads.
It would help matters significantly, though, if we didn't have a president who's currently trying to commit genocide in Puerto Rico.

(3,764 posts)but these Russian helicopters would fit the bill. Too bad we can't get some of these:
Powered by a pair of 11,000 horsepower turboshaft engines, the Halo and its five-man crew can transport up to 44,000 pounds of cargo, or roughly 11 family cars, at once. The Halo's power and payload capacity is more than twice that of the U.S Army's workhorse CH-47 Chinook helicopter.

45k max on the hook minus 7k tare weight means only 38k of usable load...which sounds like a lot until you remember what water weighs.
No, the big Oshkosh container haulers are still our best bet.

(68 posts)Someone needs to start counting bodies . . . those who died DURING Maria, but also those who have died since. Between no energy, no communication, dwindling supplies of food/water/medicine . . . the death toll must be rising rapidly. Right now, with no communications, no one is able to do this morbid count. But when the bodies can be heaped at Trump's feet . . . and the blood can be "seen" on his hands, perhaps the outrage will rise to a level where needed action will be taken.

(5,810 posts)He has proven to be unfit as a human being, much less a person in leadership. I keep thinking that sooner or later he will go too far and even the most die hard fans will abandon him. I keep forgetting that they are as cruel and heartless as he is. That is why they were drawn to him in the first place. Like moths to the flame.
I hope that someone is keeping track of his lack of judgment, cruelty and unnecessary meaness. Some day---oh, please let it be soon---he needs to be confronted with his awfulness. I want to see him have to sit there and try to defend what cannot be defended. Tie him to the chair if we must, but force him to sit there and see it all. Bastard, SOB, POS etc are words that are inadequate to describe him.

(19,233 posts)She's a widow in her 80's in a suburb of San Juan. She's got help; her even older brother-in-law and his wife. They're doing this in heat and humidity without power, sewer or running water, because the alternative is to sit down and break down mentally from utter helplessness. We've had all of two phone calls from them in the last 3 weeks, each less than 5 minutes before they lost the signal.
But please, tell me more about those lazy Puerto Ricans.....
