Catalan referendum: preliminary results show 90% in favour of independence
Source: The Guardian
Catalan officials have claimed that preliminary results of its referendum have shown 90% in favour of independence in the vote vehemently opposed by Spain.
Jordi Turull, the Catalan regional government spokesman, told reporters early on Monday morning that 90% of the 2.26 million Catalans who voted Sunday chose yes. He said nearly 8% of voters rejected independence and the rest of the ballots were blank or void. He said 15,000 votes were still being counted. The region has 5.3 million registered voters.
Turull said the number of ballots did not include those confiscated by Spanish police during violent raids which resulted in hundreds of people being injured. At least 844 people and 33 police were reported to have been hurt, including at least two people who were thought to have been seriously injured.
Catalonias regional leader, Carles Puigdemont, spoke out against the violence with a pointed address: On this day of hope and suffering, Catalonias citizens have earned the right to have an independent state in the form of a republic.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who considers today's referendum illegal, sent in shock troops to sequester ballot boxes and stop today's vote.

(4,572 posts)movement....it is bullshit from a small nationalist party (which happens to be from France not Spain, so these guys had no stake in the vote anyway)....i do read and speak Catalan, by the way
Catalan Barcelonans are on the whole left-leaning and welcoming to immigrants and refugees...they were about roughly split regarding independence, but i imagine that the crackdown against the voting pushed a lot of people into the pro-independence column...hard to say what the real numbers would have beeen though since ballots were confiscated by the police before voting started
The material you posted is from March 2015 blog and from a group based in France. Not especially relevant to today's election.

And "but they are French" is every bit as meaningful as saying the ones in territorial Spain are Spanish.

(1,830 posts)There is no way to count legitimate votes. The ballot boxes came out to the public already stuffed with "Yes" votes, they boxes were never sealed as the process is supposed to be done and every poll showed the vote 50% for and 50% against, They could have won, but never but 90%. It would hurt the economy and businesses will flee the region.

(62,444 posts)Not that that means anything in particular. Personally, I don't have a full depth of knowledge on the topic, and ultimately this is up to the Catalonians and Spain.
But fractures in NATO and the EU are always welcome developments to some, regardless of whatever the merits of the underlying argument may be.
Given that the Spanish courts had deemed the referendum to be unauthorized, then I would expect that "remain" voters would not have bothered much with it.

A mission? Not precisely.
I've been involved in civil disobedience and direct action in the past, and I know how the media can warp its public perception.
I live in Scotland. One day in the not too distant future, my friends, family, neighbours and I may be involved in civil disobedience for a number of reasons, possibly even about seeking Scottish independence. The parallels with the Catalonian situation aren't precise, but they're there.
And if that happens, and if Putin's bots do decide to stick their oar in unwelcome, can I look forward to you condemning any violence we may be subject to at the hands of the UK state, or will you be making excuses for it and justifying it on grounds of legality and because some anonymous entities have posted disinformation about it online?

(7,795 posts)Especially on is current trajectory.
Our "going broke", as you put it, is a UK nationalist myth. Nobody knows the true balance of payments of Scotland's contribution to the UK, but the consensus among responsible economists is that its strength is underestimated (likely deliberately).
We have vast oil and gas resources which have been horribly mismanaged for decades, and recent finds off Shetland mean that could last for decades. The UK could have rivalled Norway's vast social fund, but instead fails to tax the oil companies and we see little benefit from it, either as Scotland or as the UK. We have other vast natural resources with great potential if they were stewarded responsibly, which they haven't been despite the Scottish government's efforts over those areas where it has jurisdiction.
But this is 500 miles and 500 more from the question of the rights and wrongs of people being savagely brutalized for acts of civil disobedience. And by "people", I mean potentially me and mine in the future.

It really makes one wonder where this evil will end, or are we all doomed to see it simply replay, over and over.
Quite a bit of this fascist crap going around, sandensea.
That was a vivid look at the day's work for the Spanish police spreading Rajoy's greetings. Poor, poor people could not have possible expected to see this.

Natasha Salmon 6 hours ago
Firefighters in Catalonia have turned out to support the independence referendum in the region by forming a human barrier between riot police and voters.
People took to social media to praise the fire officers for stepping in to 'protect the public' from the violence seen since polling stations opened on Sunday morning.
Days before the referendum was due to take place hundreds of firefighters gathered along the roof of Catalonia's history museum with a banner saying 'Love democracy'.
Thousands of people turned out to vote in the region on whether it should seek independence from the central Spanish government.
