If you're off for an injury in construction, transportation, extraction or other industry that's hard on your body, the idea is to get back to work as quickly as possible. Opioids are great for working through the pain, but of courses then you never heal properly, and you become dependent, and then addicted. Twenty years ago, these guys were all alcoholics. Now they take pills. Any discussion about the opioid epidemic -- or any addiction issues in our nation -- needs to be paired with serious discussions about work, the role of work and what the idea of "productivity" should be.
tl;dr: Capitalism kills.
