Sanders: It is 'highly inappropriate' to debate Kelly

Washington (CNN)White House press secretary Sarah Sanders defended White House chief of staff John Kelly Friday after he made erroneous claims about a Democratic congresswoman the day before.
Sanders told reporters it was "highly inappropriate" to debate the chief of staff over his statement, given that he is a retired four-star Marine general.
"If you want to go after General Kelly, that is up to you," she said. "If you want to get into a debate with a four-star Marine general, I think that is something highly inappropriate."
Kelly erroneously claimed Thursday that Rep. Frederica Wilson, a Florida Democrat, had taken credit for funding a new FBI building in Miami. Kelly's comment, which was meant to defend President Donald Trump's condolence call that upset the family of a fallen solider, was disproved by a video of Wilson's speech.
After her comments about the propriety of contesting Kelly's statements caused a stir, Sanders said in an email comment to CNN: "Of course everyone can be questioned. But after witnessing General Kelly's heartfelt and somber account, we should all be able to agree that impugning his credibility on how best to honor fallen heroes is not appropriate."

As I try to understand Sanders' logic here, it appears she believes that if a general gives a "heartfelt and somber account" - regardless of whether he's speaking the truth - it's not appropriate to question him.
"ACTING!" as John Lovitz used to declare.
For the most part, I like Gen. Kelly. But honor dictates he apologize for his slander of Rep. Wilson.

(10,297 posts)He can now expect that every time Gen. Kelly takes the podium or is present in the Briefing Room, questions about his accusations of Rep. Wilson (D-FL) will be directed at him. He may not answer, but the press correspondents are going to make this a living issue for him. He wanted to play politics, and he is in the game now. He can avoid debates on additional issues by keeping his pie-hole shut and tending to Chief-of-Staff duties.

(10,297 posts)out of the politically "safe space" of his office as "Chief of Staff" and lied about Rep. Wilson, he became a lightning rod on the issue. He is getting what he deserves -- lots of questions from the press about his lies, probably for the rest of his life, everywhere he goes. OK with me.
Gen. Kelly should resign his office, now. His main failing is that he is stupid. Everyone knows that Trump uses people with no compassion and tosses them into the garbage can. Just before Kelly decided to confide in Trump about no call from Obama regarding his son's death, I think a flash warning went off in his mind that said "no, don't tell this SOB anything that is personal and sensitive." But, he ignored it, and then he saw the expression in Trump's face that revealed he was plotting how this information could be used to hit Obama. And, Kelly had regret sweep over himself as he thought "how do I explain it to my wife and mother of my son when this SOB uses it?" Anyway, when the movie is made, I believe that this scene will be in it.

When the DU site owner CLEARLY STATED OPs can add clarity to headlines? and used Sanders name AS EXAMPLE.

(9,100 posts)Slandering and publicly victimizing and politicizing a family and its friends in the throes of grief, when they should be allowed to vent as they need as part of the grieving process before their loved one is even interred.
If you're a humane adult, you suck it up and let the process work itself through with empathy and understanding. That's all that needed to be said in response, with some semblance of dignity: "The family and friends are understandably hurting right now, and our thoughts and prayers are with them.* No further comment."
Even Bush II seems to have had a grip on that.
If you can't live up to that standard, you have no business speaking about "honor."
* I really hate that "thoughts and prayers" formula, but it seems to be expected.

(15,720 posts)It's an odd coinky but no one is going to be confused. Anyway this whole thing is sort of strange. Wherefore the international brouhaha? The condolences seem well intentioned. It just doesn't seem to merit this much angst I guess.
