(2,241 posts)It was a liberal troll's website, claiming that its fake story was about information leaked by Breitbart?

(1,204 posts)The fake article was published on a site that puts out fake nonsense to see how many conservatives will take it and run with it.
I get the appeal of it, but it's not exactly helpful at this time.

(1,204 posts)As harmful as fake news is and as much as I find it disturbing, I don't think shutting down free speech is the way to go. If anything, I suspect that is what some of the people behind this want to happen. Unless it can be proven that the fake news stories are directly inciting violence or proven to be funded by foreign powers intending to cause unrest, then I don't know what laws are being broken. It's not against the law to be an asshole and I don't think it should be.
We currently have laws that protect people from slander and also should make inciting violence illegal. If the laws covering that need to be tweaked then discussing specific modifications seems reasonable. However, broad and vague attempts to ban fake or misleading news seems like a dangerous path. Whatever you apply to one side will also be applied to the other side. That being said, companies have every right to decide who can and cannot use their services. So if facebook or twitter takes down these accounts then more power to them. If an ISP or hosting company decides to not host certain websites, then that is totally their choice. Although I suspect other company or service provider will step in to provide whatever services go away.

(118 posts)Breitbart and some other "news" places are being investigated to see if they worked with russians too. I think it coukd be why hannity is bugging out. If they were knowingly using fake info from the russians to help trump they should be held responsible as well.
It's just sad how gullible people are. P.T. Barnum knew it and it hasn't changed.
I watched Fox and friends for a few minutes the other day. it is amazing how ridiculous it is. It is all designed to outrage people. That story about the church moving it's plaques of Washington and Lee- that is such a non-story, but they (Fox) want people to be pissed off about something, anything. They can then try to turn that outrage into votes. And it's been working.
People just have to be smarter.

(15,686 posts)You get the APPEAL of it? You're joking, right?
And, if not for the timing this would appeal to you?
So, tell me - if it's not helpful at this time, at what time exactly would it be (helpful)? And how would it be so?
I'm just not understanding your comments, I guess. Perhaps you could explain what you mean?

(26,060 posts)If someone could get those breitbart imbeciles to chase a fake story and post it and as a result get thousands of morons to look like gullible dupes who would believe anything about their political enemies, that could be appealing to someone looking for attention. It would also cast a shadow on any right wing site that pushed the story.

(90,021 posts)Toward the end of the story, the claim is made that a "'self-described liberal troll' who creates fictional stories to try to fool conservative readers" is responsible for this particular fake news. Just wants to fuck with 'em, 'eh? Seems a wee bit idiotic to me. A lot of those jerks believe anything about Democrats, liberals, progressives, President Obama, Hillary Clinton as long as it's negative. Why on earth feed them more phony-ass encouragement or validation?
