Virginia flips 14 seats blue in biggest Democratic pick-up since 1899

Democrats scored an enormous moral victory and a blow to Donald Trump on Tuesday by electing Ralph Northam as the next governor of Virginia.
But in addition to electing Northam, Democrats flipped 14 number of seats in the Virginia House of Delegates the largest Democratic gain in a single election in the state since 1899. This victory triples the total number of Democratic state legislative pickups since Trump was elected, and reduces the GOP majority to just a few seats.
Many of these individual races were themselves inspiring. There was Danica Roem, the transgender journalist who beat a virulently antigay GOP lawmaker. There was Kathy Tran, who will be Virginias first Asian-American woman lawmaker. There was Chris Hurst, whose reporter girlfriend was shot and killed on live TV, and who gave up his career in news to go into politics and fight gun violence.
But Democrats did even more than win big on Tuesday. They broke a Republican gerrymandering scheme in Virginia that has been in force for nearly a decade.

(3,330 posts)If D's are at 48 and they are up in 2 of the 5 remaining seats, then they get to 50 if they bring those home. Is that Control with the Lt. Gov a D?

I count--and I may have missed something, but I don't think so:
FORTY SIX HOD WINS FOR THE DEMOCRATS
SIX TOO CLOSE TO CALL, AND OF THOSE:
THREE SHOW A DEMOCRATIC VICTORY
TWO A PUKE WIN
If this is a final result it means 50 Pukes, 49 Democrats and if we can take HOD 95 (Correction HOD 94), a 50-50 HOD, which means a Democratic HOD.
Un--frigging--believable!

(145 posts)will probably be in recount for a while. And on HOD 94--with a 12 vote difference: ??????????????????

(24,345 posts)I have 94 as Yancey and Simonds
Am I getting the wrong info?
You are absolutely correct.
I misread 94 for 95. BIG APOLOGIES!
But 12 Vote diff. And people think their vote doesn't count. Just show them the HOD 94 results.
Sorry about the mistake!
I am unfamiliar with Virginia politics
I've been watching the House of Delegates numbers
I wondered if there was another slate of votes (like House and Senate) that I was missing
Thanks much

(145 posts)The HOUSE OF DELEGATES (HOD) is the lower house--like the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES in our congress. HOD is voted on every two years in and off year election. This means that the next HOD Election is 2019.
Virginia State Senators run all at the same time every fourth year, also in an off year election. So the next Virginia Senate election is also 2019.
Right now the R's hold the State Senate 21 - 19. However, if one Senator switches, with the state hierarchy being completely Blue, that would make the State Senate Blue as well.
Depending on House District 94--with its 12 vote difference--both HOD and State Senate could belong to the Democrats before year's end.
Stranger things have happened--like flipping the Virginia HOD tonight. Again,
UN-FRIGGIN'--BELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(4,372 posts)My anxiety level was high all day, I can breath again. A huge blue-wave tonight and hopefully for years to come. A blue gubernatorial win in Virginia!! YES!! A transgender lawmaker in Virginia? YES!!! First Asian, YES!!! America, have you finally woken to wipe your eyes and see through all the bullshit, lies and con artists in the repuke party? I hope so. It is the character of the individuals you elect that matters. Not what they look like or who they love. Thank you Virginia!

(206,420 posts)My district here in New York did well, too - the Democrats I was most rooting for won! A lot of local offices are decided in the Republican primaries so I just vote a straight ticket, voted for exactly three candidates today and I already know that the most important office was won by the Democrat.
