Trump picks former pharmaceutical executive who worked in government to lead Health and Human Services, replacing Tom Price

Alex Azar, who served as a deputy secretary in the Health and Human Services Department during the George W. Bush administration, would succeed Price as the new HHS secretary. Price resigned in September amid criticism for taking noncommercial flights at taxpayer expense.

President Trump’s decision represents a pragmatic pick. An establishment figure with a reputation as a conservative thinker and a methodical lawyer, Azar would be expected to use his prior government experience to pursue Trump’s goals through executive action — such as shifting the Affordable Care Act in more conservative directions.

Until January, Azar was president of Lilly USA, the biggest affiliate of pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Co.
