Trump Pressed Top Republicans to End Senate Russia Inquiry
Source: New York Times
WASHINGTON President Trump over the summer repeatedly urged senior Senate Republicans, including the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, to end the panels investigation into Russias interference in the 2016 election, according to a half dozen lawmakers and aides. Mr. Trumps requests were a highly unusual intervention from a president into a legislative inquiry involving his family and close aides.
Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina, the intelligence committee chairman, said in an interview this week that Mr. Trump told him that he was eager to see an investigation that has overshadowed much of the first year of his presidency come to an end.
It was something along the lines of, I hope you can conclude this as quickly as possible, Mr. Burr said. He said he replied to Mr. Trump that when we have exhausted everybody we need to talk to, we will finish.
In addition, according to lawmakers and aides, Mr. Trump told Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, and Senator Roy Blunt, Republican of Missouri and a member of the intelligence committee, to end the investigation swiftly.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat who is a former chairwoman of the intelligence committee, said in an interview this week that Mr. Trumps requests were inappropriate and represented a breach of the separation of powers.

(14,708 posts)If those republican senators didn't report that to the sc, they are guilty of felonies. It was obvious it was an attempt to obstruct justice. To not report it is misprision of a felony.
They had no imunity to keep it secret, the requests had nothing to do with hearings..
They can be prosecuted.

They will always answer his call, and this was before Mueller got involved. I guess his voters can try and buy it, the rest of us won't.

It's not likely that Trump will be indicted by Mueller, but these stories go to the matter of "corrupt intent" on the obstruction of justice statute. It certainly helps solidify charges in any impeachment proceeding.

(14,708 posts)If hillary had even spoken to a legislative aid about ending the benghazi inquiry?
What kind of shit storm, and for how long, would that have lasted? They'd have to build a new building just to hold all the committees that would be investigating her.
But the repubicans just call an obvious obstruction a nothingburger and move on.
I'm beyond disgusted.
