Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Russian government's efforts to interfere with the 2016 election has cost more than $5 million, ABC News has learned.
Those expenses include money for a staff of more than 16 attorneys, dozens of FBI agents, support staff, travel and office supplies.
A more detailed breakdown of those expenditures is expected to be released in the coming days. Investigations of this nature can take years to resolve and run into the tens of millions of dollars.
The Ken Starr probe into Whitewater the investigation into Bill and Hillary Clinton and associates' real estate dealings and other matters saw more than $70 million in expenditures and went on for more than six years.

(9,426 posts)investigations cost more than this. They found nothing, so opened another investigation. So, thus far it has cost just a little more than one of Orange Ass's trips to Mar-A-Lago, but well worth the cost.

(7,142 posts)she said to expect Republicans to throw a fit about the cost. I am ready to donate and I bet a heck of a lot more people are too to keep this train rolling.

(32,628 posts)The cost of this investigation is only $5 million so far- pffft that's nothing!
Mueller will get at least $11 million or more when Manafort splits the country. Manafort has posted 4 properties as bail to get out of his house arrest. It was on the news last night. Everybody's betting that Manafort will take-off immediately for an unknown unfriendly country that has no extradition setup with the USA. That means Mueller gets whatever assets Manafort has forfeited, including those 4 properties.
Not that Mueller has to make a profit on this investigation, but at least it will shut up the GOP complaints.

(22,029 posts)He'll rage with fury. He'll claim it's far too much money to being wasting on a witch hunt. He'll try to use executive powers to defund the investigation. He'll start looking for ways to claim Mr. Mueller is going outside of his mandate and needs to be fired.
Or he'll start a war or cause an economic meltdown. Then, no one will care about the Trump-Russia thing.

(64,993 posts)Not on you, Don. But, this is 5 million in 2017 dollars and they're comparing it to $70 million in 1996 dollars. Mueller would have to continue the investigation for 11.5 years to hit the Whitewater value.

Weren't the special investigators already on the government payroll and if so wouldn't they get paid to do their regular job if they weren't seconded to the special prosecutor?
