Families warned they may lose children's health coverage

Source: NBC News

State officials in Virginia started warning families this week that the popular Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is about to run out of money.

It's one of several states that have given notice or are preparing to tell families that funding for the program has ended and Congress has failed to renew it.

For many families, that could mean an end to their health care unless they find someone to offer free care to their kids, according to Linda Nablo, chief deputy director at Virginia's Department of Medical Assistance Services.

"I would say most families, their children will go without insurance," Nablo said.

The CHIP program is being cut or outright abolished in many, many states - including my own home state of Colorado. Rather than vote for the funding to continue the program, the republican controlled congress is deliberately leaving it to die a slow (and hopefully unknown demise) in some broom closet in the basement of a congressional office building in DC. The children who qualify for CHIP are often stuck between a rock and a hard place - their parents make too much money to qualify for medicaid, yet not enough to be able to afford private insurance.

One of my friend's adorable 7 year-old daughter has lost her medical coverage under CHIP, and her Mom is frantically searching for alternatives that apparently don't exist. What kind of low life scum would deny that innocent child medical care? What kind of low life scum would deny some of America's neediest children access to things like vaccinations or critical care due to an accident or catastrophic sickness?

The members of the republican party - that's who. A society is judged by the way it treats its most vulnerable members. Our children are our country's hope for a better future. They should be valued and cherished. Instead, they are being cast aside in favor of tax breaks for bloated corporations and even more bloated millionaires and billionaires. What is the upper 1% going to do for the future of our country? I'll tell you what. Stash their billions in even more secret offshore tax havens and make all the use they can of the new loopholes which will be written down there in the fine print with only the financial servants of individuals like the Koch bros and Donald Trump to notice - and take gleeful advantage of them.

I would be less than honest if I didn't admit that things such as this make me hate my country.

I just slightly edited your wonderful words and sent them to my repub congress person. I ended by saying that the repubs cared only about fetal tissue, but nothing about actual children.

If anyone feels that my humble words are worthy of passing on, please do so. I e-mail and call my Colorado rep(tiles) all the time. Can't wait for the midterms to get rid of the repugs who "represent" my state!

…..about is how the tax cuts will cause such and such an income bracket to pay more or less taxes.

They never explain the real cost. The loss of CHIP, schooling, infrastructure, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, safety, libraries, museums, community college, public transportation, research, etc. etc. etc.—everything we need to be a civilization with a commons.

They seem bound and determined to make us a sick, uneducated, 3rd rate country.

is that the gop seem unconcerned about taxpayers finding out about all the cuts. Why are they not concerned about being voted out of office? Do they know something the rest of us do not know? McConnell KNEW long before the "election" that tRump was going to be in the WH. That is why he refused hearings on Garland for the SC. He said "The next president will fill the vacancy" He KNEW it would not be Hillary. What does he know now, I wonder?

Look at the way they are pushing this Orwellian named "tax cut" bill into law with as few people as possible understanding just what these so-called "tax cuts" will entail. It's like a 10K run in the race for the bottom. Blink and you'll never see what is actually going on. All hail to the traitor Donald Trump and his merry band of billionaires - robbing the poor and giving the proceeds to the upper 1%.

It's all about having the power to subjugate women and deny us the right to control our own bodies. Try being a homeless single Mom and showing up at the local evangelical church and asking for help. They spit on people in this situation.

True story: I am a single woman who back in the day enjoyed hiking and camping in the Colorado/Utah backcountry - ie the desert. I am very careful to always carry water and one day I found myself near the infamous Bear's Ears National Monument with only a couple of quarts of water remaining in my canteens. I did what any savvy desert explorer would do - headed to the nearest town to refill my water supplies. The town happened to be Monticello, Utah - a very clannish enclave consisting almostly exclusively of Mormons. I noticed a water spigot on the side of an LDS church which boasted a deep green lawn there in the middle of the desert. I went into the church office and politely asked the woman in the church office for permission to fill my canteens with a couple of gallons worth of water. That Mormon church lady fell into a fit as if I was the devil herself come to take all the good people of Monticello to perdition. "They have water in Bluff," she advised me (Bluff is about 60 miles from Monticello).

The Mormons are pro-life, too. Except when it comes to giving a non-believer a gallon or so of water in the desert on a hot summer's day with the temps climbing close to 100 F.

Pfah! If you live in an arid part of the country, you NEVER turn aside someone's request for water. Unless you claim to believe in Dog. Then you can force a woman to bear a child against her will and turn them both out into the desert to die of thirst. Dog's will be done, and the Fundies are certain that Dog doesn't want low income children have health care.
