Despite blatantly breaking laws half a century old that prohibits schools from pushing religion on students, a superintendent in Louisianas Webster Parish refuses to stop doing exactly that.
In a Monday announcement, the American Civil Liberties Union said they are suing Webster Parish Schools and their superintendent Johnny Rowland for promoting Christianity at Lakeside Junior/Senior High School.
As the ACLU reports, the school day at Lakeside starts with a morning prayer over the PA, read either by teachers or by student volunteers.
Nearly every Lakeside school event features an official prayer, the report continues. Graduation services are held in churches and often resemble religious services.

(32,354 posts)Trying to trade in that "education" job of his for the big attention/big money world of a full-fledged fundamentalist scofflaw. He'll probably be more successful at it than he deserves to be. If I were an area journalist, I'd be checking out the Webster Parish records for improper sexual incidents involving this guy.

I bet you were like me in 1978, I graduated and was happy to be the hell out of the dinky (my graduating class including me was 79 students,) school.
I really hated the emphasis on jocks.

(14,758 posts)It said clothing could not be disruptive. That was mainly aimed at mini-skirts, but our buttons attached to our clothes did disrupt the shit out of a lot of the teachers.
The woman attorney was glad to help us. I can remember her telling us not to tell him to fuck off; simply tell him you choose to not remove the buttons. It also helped that another dozen or so also started wearing them.
And yes, I felt like Morgan Freeman walking out of Shawshank when I left to go off to college.

(40,915 posts)Some of our 'Christians' say they want America to be a Christian run country.
Which version of Christianity will prevail?
What will they say/do when it is not their version of Christianity in charge?
Many Catholics/Protestants feel that the other is not a true Christian.
Christians in Ireland fought each other using terrorism.
We already have radical Christian terrorists in America.
A theocracy will not change that.

(34,189 posts)One teacher - thankfully not one I had - insisted on still praying at the beginning of every class. One of her students was Jehovah's Witness and objected. Fortunately our principal was much more adherent to the law and made the teacher stop her prayer meetings six times a day. He framed it to the teacher more that she needed to use every moment of classroom time to teach than trying to get into the prohibition of prayer. He did have to threaten to fire her to get her to stop altogether - she still tried to pray with her home room class every morning.
