US inflation little changed in July

US inflation came in lower than expected on a day of mixed economic data that is unlikely to dent the case for further action by the Federal Reserve.

The headline consumer price index was unchanged in July, while the core CPI –which excludes volatile food and energy prices –rose by only 0.1 per cent. That was below expectations of 0.2 per cent and the slowest increase since February.
