The British ex-spy who authored a dossier of allegations against then-presidential candidate Donald Trump was told the FBI had someone inside Trumps network providing agents with information, according to a newly released transcript of a congressional interview.
Glenn R. Simpson, founder of the research firm Fusion GPS, spoke to investigators with the Senate Judiciary Committee for 10 hours in August. As the partisan fight over Russian interference in the 2016 election has intensified, Simpson has urged that his testimony be released, and a copy of the transcript was made public Tuesday.
...snip...
My understanding was that they believed Chris at this point that they believed Chris might be credible because they had other intelligence that indicated the same thing and one of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization, Simpson said. Using the parlance of spies and law enforcement officials, Simpson said the FBI had a walk-in whistleblower from someone in Trumps organization.

(12,554 posts)another source said that this was misinterpreted. The "walk-in" source referenced above might have been the Australian diplomat who told the FBI about Papadapoulos.

(62,444 posts)It is very unusual for the FBI to give out any information, even when they are taking information from you as a witness or interested party.
The likelihood of the FBI telling some guy "we heard this from someone inside the campaign" I would put at zero.
While they may have said it was consistent with information they already knew, the "someone in the Trump camp" may be simply a gap-filling recollection on Simpson's part. If you are not familiar with the way that people's assumptions have a way of creeping into their memories, I'm not going to write a dissertation here about it. But having dealt with enough witnesses and enough examinations, I can simply tell you flat out that FBI would not reveal to someone on the outside that they had a source in the Trump camp.
As we already know, the Australians had dropped a dime on "the coffee boy", and even if the FBI had suggested they already knew what Simpson was saying, he would likely have assumed it was someone in the Trump camp, and would also remember it that way.
But here we have "unequivocal" testimony from some guy about what someone else said that some other guy had told them. Yeah, that's real "unequivocal".

(41,634 posts)Bannon didn't start with Trump's campaign until August 2016. Manafort was only there for a month or so. It was somebody who started early and didn't get fired, so that eliminates Corey Lewandowski. Maybe it was Hope Hicks?
That would be extremely cool! Cheeto would blow a gasket if it's really her.

(56,848 posts)Kellyanne Conway joined at the same time as Bannon, no? Maybe an assistant to Don Jr or Eric?
I assume they don't mean Papadapolous or Flynn?
FakeNoose
(41,634 posts)Kellyanne and Bannon came onboard together in August. It was Robert Mercer who wanted them working on the Trump campaign. Papadopoulos and Flynn both talk too much, they would have blabbed I think, and the FBI might not have trusted either of them. (I could be wrong though.)
Anybody who was an assistant probably didn't have access to the real treason, but maybe Jr. and Eric were so stupid they didn't even try to cover their tracks. I'm still reading Fire and Fury, and Michael Wolff is remarking about how few insiders there were on the campaign before Trump won the nomination. That makes it easy to point out Ms. Hicks, she's the only early insider who didn't quit or get fired.

(12,344 posts)Dud the source go to the FBI in July, or just summer? If it's summer, then it still could be Bannon. This would be consistent with his remark in the book than Don Jr. should have gone to the FBI.
