Rep. Darrell Issa to retire
Source: LA Times
Vista Republican Darrell Issa will not run for a 10th term in Congress.
The former chairman of the House Oversight Committee narrowly won reelection in 2016, and was widely considered the most vulnerable incumbent in the House going into the 2018 election.
The richest man in Congress, Issa had already drawn a handful of well funded opponents.
Throughout my service, I worked hard and never lost sight of the people our government is supposed to serve. Yet with the support of my family, I have decided that I will not seek re-election in California's 49th District, Issa said in a statement.

(10,804 posts)But there are a lot of (R)'s in north San Diego County that didn't vote
for ASS-I (ISSA backwards) because of the Cheetolini effect.
Whomever the (R)'s put up to run instead of ASS-I will probably win
that district because of Orange County voters plus north SD County (R)'s.
I hope NOT!

(16,296 posts)In four years at the helm of the House of Representatives primary investigative body, Darrell Issa launched major investigations into the 2012 attack in Benghazi, the IRSs alleged targeting of conservative organizations, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms' failed Fast and Furious operation, the bankruptcy of solar panel manufacturer Solyndra, and the launch of Healthcare.gov. In pursuit of these scandals he was granted a budget of $25,678,100.
This figure does not account for the $14 million spent by the IRS answering voluminous and often duplicative subpoenas, the millions spent by the Department of Defense responding to inquiries about the attack in Benghazi, the budget of the Oversight Committees minority staff, nor the massive expenditure of resources by the dozens of other federal agencies that have come under the scrutiny of the Oversight Committee. By its conclusion Darrell Issas chairmanship could cost the U.S. Treasury well into the nine figures. From that astounding allocation of resources, Issa has unveiled no major corruption or gotten to the bottom of no significant scandal

(23,240 posts)Not to sound complacent, but I think Issas retirement is more of a bellwether of a blue wave than some of the others. Now, if Rorbacher goes...
I dont know how many of these retirements are in solid, safe red districts, but the odds of Dems taking the house keep growing daily.

Two years ago Issa was considered undefeatable, always a shoein in the 49th. Well, then Lt Col Doug Applegate started a ground up, small donor campaign that managed to show this District who Issa really is, like Issa's Vote Against the 911 First Responders.
Applegate only lost by a sliver, 1660 votes, less than 1%...and Issa has never recovered from this campaign.
Issa even tried to sue Applegate over the 911 Responders ad, but got hit with an Anti Slapp lawsuit, preventing Issa from that Trumpian tactic of weaponizing the courts & their costs against opponents. Applegate btw is still digging out those costs, which, again seriously kneecapped Issa's future propaganda campaigns.( Not exactly sure why the DNC has not helped pay this court debt, since Applegate helped all future Issa challengers by winning this AntiSlapp judgment ag Issa.)
Then there's Indivisible & The Resistance who have protested doggedly outside Issa's North San Diego HQ since Nov 2016. There've been some entertaining mentions of what lengths Issa has tried to use the local Vista police to thwart these wonderful protestors. Issa obviously became increasingly fraught by the heat generated by these informed, persistent active protestors.
Issa was never going to recover from 2016...I think he's just another Repug who the RNC thinks better to remove and replace with a New Face, a Repug Candidate with no repulsive Repug voting history. This seems to be the emerging RNC strategy for 2018 for all the Repub incumbents who vote against their constituents best interests. Resign and be replaced by a new stenchless cypher.
