Dayton Mayor Whaley expected to drop out of governors race

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley is expected to drop her campaign for Ohio governor and put her support behind fellow Democrat Richard Cordray and his running mate Betty Sutton, according to political sources.
The Whaley campaign declined comment on Thursday but announced the mayor and Cordray would make a campaign announcement at the Dayton Metro Library downtown at 11 a.m. Friday.
Whaley announced her bid for governor in May, saying the state needs executive leadership that works with local governments and understands everyday people. On campaign trail, Whaley has pushed for expanded preschool, a crackdown on drugmakers to help pay for the cost of the opioid crisis, and good-paying jobs for Ohioans.
But a crowded primary field as well as Cordray entering the race proved challenging for Whaley, who lacks statewide name recognition.
