MEXICO CITY (AP) A Honduran legislator has been charged in a U.S. federal court with participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy and related weapons offenses.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says in a statement that it is seeking Fredy Najera Montoya's extradition.
Raymond Donovan, in charge of DEA special operations, says that "Najera used his position in the Honduran Congress to facilitate huge amounts of drug trafficking and corruption, while using security teams possessing dangerous and deadly weapons."
The anti-drug agency said Friday that Najera supported multiple drug trafficking organizations that received plane and boat loads of cocaine from Colombia that later made it to the U.S. Public officials, including members of the congress, took bribes to ensure safe passage.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Federal authorities announced drug trafficking and weapons charges against a congressman from Honduras on Friday, the latest U.S. case accusing current and former officials of the Central American country of involvement in the drug trade.
Fredy Renan Najera Montoya, 41, was charged with conspiring to import huge quantities of cocaine into the United States, according to U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman in Manhattan.
Najera, who was also charged in an indictment filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court with carrying and using machine guns, could not be reached for comment and a lawyer for him could not immediately be identified.
We are committed to attacking the drug trade at every level, regardless of a defendants status, Berman said in a statement. We look forward to trying Najera on U.S. soil.
