Midnight deadline passes without deal to prevent U.S. government shutdown

Source: CBC News

The U.S. federal government shut down at the stroke of midnight Friday, halting all but the most essential operations and marring the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration in a striking display of Washington dysfunction.

Last-minute negotiations crumbled as Senate Democrats blocked a four-week stopgap extension in a late-night vote, causing the fourth government shutdown in a quarter century. The slide toward closure lacked for high drama: The Senate vote was all but predetermined, and since the shutdown began at the start of a weekend, many of the immediate effects will be muted for most Americans.

Still, it comes with no shortage of embarrassment for the president and political risk for both parties, as they wager that voters will punish the other at the ballot box in November.

Social Security and most other safety net programs are unaffected by the lapse in federal spending authority. Critical government functions will continue, with uniformed service members, health inspectors and law enforcement officers set to work without pay. But if no deal is brokered before Monday, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed.

Dems must stick together on this, this is the test they must pass if they want to take the House or Senate

and that trump backed away from the deal. What needs to happen now is that Schumer needs to renege on those "concession", take them off the table and let trump stew away. trump knows, but refuses to admit, that it is he and his sycophantic republican ass kissers that has caused this shutdown. He will just jut his jaw, cross his arms and look like benito mussolini and will not budge until someone around him will convince him to stop being stupid and agree to the deal. Yeah, that'll happen. Sure. Just like the sun rising in the west.

Would be if the Orange Clown takes off to his inauguration anniversary gala at Mar Lago on Saturday night.
Can you imagine the government employee who is worried about his or her next paycheck while Trump and his ultra-rich friends live it up at $100,000 just to attend?

@realDonaldTrump

My sense is that people are far angrier at the President than they are at Congress re the shutdown—an interesting turn!

Since he is a blabber-tweeter, all the stuff he tweeted during the last shutdown is coming right back in his face.

since it'll take AF1 about 3 hours to get down there (plus a couple hours at each location for transport).

But he can't leave those holders of his $100,000,000 goodies waiting too long!
