Ex-Staten Island pol Michael Grimm blames tax evasion conviction on same 'corrupt' forces in Russia probe

A former Staten Island congressman who served seven months in prison for tax evasion blamed his departure from office in 2014 on the “same politically corrupt team of players” that he claims is driving the Russia investigation.

Michael Grimm, a Republican who was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010, lauded a vote among the chamber’s intelligence committee on Monday night to declassify a highly contested GOP-written memo.

The memo, drafted by staff for Rep. Devin Nunes, is said to include claims the FBI and the Justice Department used improper methods to obtain a search warrant to surveil a Trump campaign associate.

While Republicans familiar with the memo have said the document would reveal political bias in the Russia probe, Democrats have slammed it as an attempt to cover up for President Trump, who has five days to decide whether to release the memo to the public.
