The anti-DACA interviewees then met Esmeralda, who was brought to the U.S. when she was two from Mexico City and is a DACA recipient, along with her young daughter Rose. Kimmel asked her a series of questions, the answers to which dispelled the usual myths about immigrants: Esmeralda has a job, pays taxes, has a Social Security card, is working to become a nurse and contributes to society.
Kimmel then turned the question back to the conservatives: Knowing all this, should Esmeralda be sent back to Mexico? Half of the conservatives in the room eagerly confirmed that they felt she should.
Kimmel then brought in Esmeralda's fiancé, Michael, an American-born conservative, who works at a maximum-security prison and is a soldier in the U.S. military. Kimmel revealed that Michael will be deployed soon, making the tentative status of DACA all the more pressing for their family and daughter Rose.
Did this make any difference, Kimmel wanted to know. It didn't, really. Get an immigration attorney, one person suggested (they have one). Go back to Mexico and apply for a green card. (They've looked into it, it could take up to 10 years, if successful at all).

I guess we should be glad that the Trumpsters did not try a citizens arrest in order to defend their culture.

(2,338 posts)All of those people who said she should be deported, without a doubt, couldnt pass the Citizenship Test. And she probably could.
What country do I live in? Its hard to remember that it used to be a republic with democratic ideologies. Where has my country gone?

(4,516 posts)I'll bet if a dog came across the boarder and was starving they would want animal control to pick it up and find it a home.
My brother is a Catholic priest. He has a house in Mexico and he helps out at a mission feeding potential immigrants mostly from Haiti waiting to come to this country.
He told me that when people get deported they are on the streets in Mexico without any papers and they get picked up by the police. I am not sure what happens then but many of these folks spent most of their lives in this country. They are as out of place in Mexico as any of us would be.

(409 posts)at that beautiful family and not have compassion for their situation and WANT them to remain a part of our society? Her fiance is in the military and is getting ready to be deployed. She works, pays taxes, and goes to nursing school. She's been here since she was 2-years-old. All she's ever known as her home is America. Their baby is absolutely adorable. Pretty much all but one of the conservatives in that room were all for having the woman deported immediately, even as her fiance is being deployed to serve our country. In their eyes, the sooner she's deported the better even.
They didn't care that it could take up to ten years for her to be able to come back here to live legally, if ever allowed to at all. They're absolutely heartless. They're among the worst our country has to offer. They sit there in all of their ignorance and privilege, frothing at the mouth to have some of the best of what our country has to offer ripped from their homes, families, and the country they've grown up in.
Elections have consequences and dismantling DACA is just one of the many consequences we're facing now as a result of the last election. I hope all of the people who stayed home instead of voted, and all of the Susan Sarandon's of the country who voted 3rd party, feel ashamed knowing the consequences that real families like Esmeralda's are now facing because of them.
