Julian Castro: 'I have every interest in running' for president in 2020

Source: The Hill

BY LUIS SANCHEZ - 02/06/18 11:38 AM EST

Julián Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio, Texas and secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Obama, says he has "every interest in running" for president in 2020.

Castro is expected to headline the New Hampshire Young Democrats Granite Slate Awards Dinner next Friday — a move that could mark the start of a 2020 bid. New Hampshire, which holds the country’s first presidential primaries, is usually a strong testing ground for candidates eyeing a presidential run.

"I have every interest in running" in 2020 for president, Castro told NBC News. "Part of the process of figuring out whether I'm going to run is going to listen to folks and feel the temperature of voters."

The event hosted by the Young Democrats is usually attended by a little more than 100 people. However, this year, interest has been so high they had to move the event to a larger venue. Tickets are selling for $30 to $2,500.

No doubt it is too far in the future to be talking about intention -- unless one is Donald Trump, who hasn't stopped campaigning since he was "elected."

Mr. Castro comes off as a bit hackneyed to me. I am skeptical of those who have not held statewide office. Senator or governor from Texas would be impressive.

That said, I do like Luis Gutierrez as a candidate. I don't think he would win the nomination, but I do think he could drive the conversation. He is very well spoken and has an edge. He is in the moment and not too shy to take a rhetorical swing. Another Chicago guy.

I don't know who it's going to be, but they are going to have to be quick and tough. If the U.S. annexed Canada, would that make Jennifer Granholm eligible?

3. I doubt it. Article 2 of the US Constitution reads:
Tue Feb 6, 2018, 01:51 PM
Feb 2018

“No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.”

Even if we annexed Canada, that would not make her a natural born citizen.

For a Dem candidate. There is less ammunition for the republicans to use against the candidate - this worked to Pres O's advantage in 2008...

Both good. Castro's resume is light but more substantive than that of another who's been talked up a lot lately and will give him huge competition. ("I love his face. It's so Irish!" Lol.)

Seems to me a big test of viability will be in Castro's ability to focus the energy of Hispanic voters, of course, and that won't be shown for some while.

Go Castros! (Sure to be a family effort).

While Texas is still very red in the rural areas, the cities have been turning blue. Abbott will be hard to defeat, but the Democratic candidates running against him do not have the name recognition of Julián Castro and I fear that he will easily win re-election. Running for governor here would have been a logical step for Castro toward a future federal office.

Joe Kennedy is especially too young. He's only 37. He needs to at least get elected to the Senate before he even contemplates running for president.

The people who could be suckered into thinking that Clinton was too corporate will embrace Castro with his strong family history of populist activism. And since Dreamers in Danger are this years Gay People Who Can't Get Married, his candidacy will make people who support him feel good about themselves. It won't just be a Vote Against Trump. It will be a Vote For Dreamers.

I am betting that the Russians are scared of him and will try to ensnare him in one of their faux sex scandals. Good luck with that. His mama raised him too well for that.
