FBI surveillance of Carter Page might have picked up Bannon
Source: Politico
The FBI was monitoring Carter Page when the former Trump campaign adviser says he spoke with Trump adviser Steve Bannon about Russia in January 2017, raising the strong possibility that the FBI intercepted a conversation between the two men.
Page told Congress in November about the call. But it has been cast into a new light by last weeks release of a Republican memo revealing that the FBI was monitoring Pages communications at the time.
If Page was using one of his standard phones, it was probably picked up," said Elizabeth Goitein, a former Justice Department trial attorney and congressional counsel who co-directs the Brennan Center for Justice's Liberty and National Security Program.
The significance of a possible FBI recording depends on the exact content of the conversation between Bannon and Page, about which Page has been vague. But it means the FBI's surveillance of Page which has been the subject of intense partisan anger in Washington may have touched one of the highest-ranking figures in Trump's incoming administration just days before inauguration.

SO THIS MEANS, among other things. that the Nunes memo informed Steve Bannon (and anyone else who spoke with Carter Page during the months in which he was surveilled) that Mueller might already have a transcript of any conversations they had.
This might be important info for Bannon when he meets with Mueller next week.

(17,580 posts)use a FISA warrant on Carter Page, a surveillance target since 2013, as the vehicle to smear the Steele information. It just doesn't make a lot of sense on the surface. But it does make more sense if, during the 12 months Page was being surveilled, there were conversations intercepted discussing coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. Then discrediting the FISA warrant would theoretically discredit any incriminating information picked up while it was in force.

(9,298 posts)the wood chipper of justice is having you roll the dice, Mr. Bannon. Does he have a transcript or not?

(55,525 posts)handed over to Rosenstein and he decides what to do with it. It may not get released to the public. We may never find out what any of the testimony or transcripts say. This is why I agree with the Dems who still want an Independent Committee. The GOP won't address their may bills calling for one. It would be quick, fully funded and staffed, non partisan and couldn't be derailed by either party, and it would be transparent.

On second thought, I just remembered hearing someone point out today that no one knows FOR SURE whether a President could be indicted. So if Mueller wanted to, he could get a grand jury to indict, and then see what the Supreme Court has to say about that. In the meantime, the indictment would be public.

And even if it's not officially released, it will see the light of day.
