One of these is apparently a "joke" and the doofus said he was going to use a Nerf gun. Why the hell would anyone ever think this was a "joking" matter?
Others apparently were the real deal. Just how many close calls did we have here? How many of these 12 were legit school shooters who were caught before they could go on a rampage?
Why is our country so sick?

(4,522 posts)Purposely and expressly for control. As the result of decades of marketing and brainwashing us all into individual, controllable, consumers. The culture of "you" that has been sold as empowering has been used to isolate and diminish us all.
Not the only reason. But a big one that people refuse to acknowledge.

(14,488 posts)A populace focused solely on individualism represents minimum possibility of community efforts and revolt. I've observed a trend since the 60s of worsening consumerism, little fear of debt, and the slow fracturing of our close-knit communities. Much of this has been done by massive M&A (destroying many local community-oriented companies) and the build-out of thousands of Walmarts, and other big box stores.
The corporate world prefers us to be just robotic buyers of things, with little or no human-to-human interaction to collectively question their motives, the sourcing of their products, or what they do with their profits.
America has forgotten that community is what made America great, whether on a wagon train or in New York City.
As you said, America is blind to this reality.................

(14,488 posts)Now in my wish list in the ultimate outlet of consumerism (Amazon), LOL. But, I'll try to buy elsewhere from a small outlet.
Another very disturbing trend in the last 20-years or so is the drastic change in the nature of dialog between common folks. Whereas in the 60s and 70s, we had nice respectful dialog between ladies and gentlemen, nowadays there is an air of "always out-do the other person" in conversation. I'm still trying to figure out how to express this problem to people, and perhaps return to a kinder and gentler mode at least with a few friends. Frankly, I'm repulsed by the responses in conversation with some people in my life.
This clearly ties into the drive toward individualism, fostered by corporatism, consumerism and the Ayn Rand right-wing.
I'm grateful for a son and daughter and a couple of friends that have not drifted into that mental state and I enjoy discussing things with them.

(6,928 posts)A student at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School was arrested Friday in connection with threats of violence posted on social media, Wichita police and the Catholic Diocese of Wichita confirmed. School officials were alerted to the threat at 7 a.m. Friday, diocesan spokesman Matt Vainer said in a prepared statement.
We were made aware of a posting on social media by one of our students which was inappropriate and concerning in regards to the safety of our school community, Vainer said. Due to the nature of the post, the student has been taken into custody and the administration is working with law enforcement. We have been assured at this time, that there is no legitimate threat to any of our students, or the school.
