Schumer: Senate Republicans' silence 'deafening' on guns, Russia

Source: The Hill

BY BRETT SAMUELS - 02/18/18 12:33 PM EST

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Sunday criticized Senate Republicans for their reaction to both a mass shooting at a Florida high school and charges against Russian nationals for allegedly meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

Schumer’s tweet comes in the wake of a chaotic news week. Last Wednesday, a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., killing 17 people and wounding several others.

In the days since, students and staff from the high school have pleaded with federal lawmakers to enact legislation to curb gun violence. Some Republicans have expressed support for improving the criminal background check system, but many have also argued other issues are to blame for the incident, such as mental illness and a breakdown in the reporting system.

Also, on Friday, the Justice Department announced charges against 13 Russian nationals and three Russian organizations for allegedly attempting to interfere in the 2016 election. The indictment alleges the goal of the Russians was to support then-candidate Donald Trump, and damage his opponent, Hillary Clinton.
