Age limit for buying AR-15 assault rifle 'on the table': White House

Source: Reuters

FEBRUARY 20, 2018 / 4:10 PM / UPDATED 25 MINUTES AGO

Reuters Staff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday setting an age limit for buying AR-15-type assault rifles, the type purchased legally by a teenager who shot dead 17 people at a Florida high school last week, was under consideration.

“I think that’s certainly something that’s on the table for us to discuss and that we expect to come up over the next couple of weeks,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said at a daily briefing when asked if President Donald Trump believed there should be an age limit for the purchase of AR-15-type rifles.

Age limit for buying AR-15 assault rifle 'on the table': White House (Original Post) DonViejo Feb 2018 OP
If we can justify a limit for handguns at 21, rifles are within scope too. AtheistCrusader Feb 2018 #1

The very idea of spending time and effort on deciding anything other than the complete and total banning of private ownership of assault weapons is asinine. And I'm a lifelong gun owner/hunter. I see no need for military weapons in the hands of the public.

How do we trust 18 year olds to go in the military and train with real machine guns and explosives? Because of the shift in maturity should the age for military service be raised as well?

The president doesn't have the power to set this in place. Only congress can do that.

And they won't, so it doesn't matter what happy words trump uses.

He's lying.

And tens of millions more that operate the same

Mine was 650$ new in 1986. It has appreciated in value since. But lets go with bare bones $650. That's $5,850,000,000 in known, JUST AR-15 models in buyback costs.

Right now, the hot thing is to make your own. People are frantically doing it right now, because the lower part of the receiver is classified as the firearm. It just needs a serial number and you can mill one out of an aluminium block at home. The parts and tools to do this, are backordered nation-wide right now.

(As a gun owner, I will admit, the fact that people are frantically making them in anticipation of a ban is disturbing and poor taste if not outright sick.)

for anyone under 18 to buy a long gun anyway. I worked at a Western Auto as a college student in SC in the 80's and that was the case.
And it wasn't an SC thing as there wasn't even any state paperwork filled out for purchasing a long gun, just federal.

Does a customer have to be a certain age to buy firearms or ammunition from a licensee?

Yes. Under the Gun Control Act (GCA), shotguns and rifles, and ammunition for shotguns or rifles may be sold only to individuals 18 years of age or older. All firearms other than shotguns and rifles, and all ammunition other than ammunition for shotguns or rifles may be sold only to individuals 21 years of age or older. Licensees are bound by the minimum age requirements established by the GCA regardless of State or local law. However, if State law or local ordinances establish a higher minimum age for the purchase or disposition of firearms, the licensee must observe the higher age requirement.

go to a shooting range that will let you borrow one and will even let you fire fully automatic weapons. other than that they should be banned.

they have no legitimate purpose for hunting or home defense.

It will happen. Just a matter of time.
