Federal investigators have requested all communications between two top execs. at American Media Inc. -- which publishes the National Enquirer -- and Michael Cohen, multiple sources confirm to NBC News.

Say along the lines of "Hey we need help covering the stories up so if you will provide the funds we will gladly help you in other ways down the road".

and quickly accepted what many thought was a low figure for hush money/the fee before burying the story:
Davidson recently surfaced as the man who brokered Trumps payment of $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about their tryst. He also represented Karen McDougal, the 1998 Playmate of the Year who sold the story of her nine-month affair with Trump to the National Enquirer for $150,000.

They may be looking for evidence of collusion between lawyers "representing" opposing sides.
