Syria resumes shelling on Damascus districts

Source: Al Jazeera

August 22, 2012

The Syrian army has deployed tanks on a ring road surrounding Damascus and shelled southern neighbourhoods where rebels operate, the heaviest bombardment in the capital since the army reasserted control last month, residents and activists said.

At least 40 people were killed in the shelling, which was accompanied by attacks from helicopters, and in ensuing ground raids on the Kfar Souseh, Daraya, Qadam and Nahr Aisha neighbourhoods, they said.

"The whole of Damascus is shaking with the sound of shelling," a woman in Kfar Souseh said.

She said the army's artillery was also firing on the capital from the Qasioun and Saraya mountains overlooking Damascus. The assaults in the capital coincide with the departure of the United Nations observer mission, whose members are leaving after failing to secure a ceasefire.

No thank you. I don't want my tax dollars supporting al-Qaeda or any other Salafist insurgents.

With uprisings in 21 different cities.

They're completely different animals.

As much as I feel for the Syrian people it's going to get a whole whole lot worse before it gets better and Russia or China get involved.

lots of people say we have to go to war, troops on the ground, planes in the air, like that Iraq and Afghanistan experience... ridiculous nonsense ... it took 23 guys and a couple of very smart dogs to get ol laden to the bottom of the sea ...

6. And after we assassinate that sitting head of state, then what?

Picnics and peace parades in Syria?

And can you point me to anything in international law that says the US can unilaterally assassinate the head of state of a country with which we are not at war and which is not threatening to attack us?

"Law or no law" is the law of the jungle. Maybe you should take your blood lust elsewhere.

Though I must say I haven't heard about cluster bombs being used on civilians. Got a link?

Of course, there are war crimes being committed all over the place in Syria, by all sides. Why should we be involved?

8. Iran will step up international terrorism attacks on the west, and attack Israel if Assad's removed

Which means we'll attack Iran since we have an agreement with Israel. Which means the region will erupt into WW III.

Removing Assad will do nothing to stop the religious sectarian civil war that's been raging in Syria for the past 18 months. This is not an Arab Spring type of revolutionary movement where toppling the leader will create a glorious regime change. It would completely destabilize the entire region and quite literally spark a genocide of massive proportions.
