NPR Newscaster Carl Kasell Dies At 84, After A Lifelong Career On-Air

Every weekday for more than three decades, his baritone steadied our mornings. Even in moments of chaos and crisis, Carl Kasell brought unflappable authority to the news.

But behind that hid a lively sense of humor, revealed to listeners late in his career, when he became the beloved judge and official scorekeeper for Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! NPR's news quiz show.

Kasell died Tuesday from complications from Alzheimer's disease in Potomac, Md. He was 84.

He was such a great personality on Wait Wait. It was nice to get to know the person behind the respected journalist.

He was such a fixture in our life during those weekend mornings on Wait Wait. I will never forget the time my toddler daughter complained "do we have to listen to Carl Kastle today?" He was so identified with that show that even to a toddler, it was his show.

The current administration negated the part about taxes. But death - no escaping that. We're born to die is what it comes down to. After seven decades plus, I find myself looking out for that flowing black veil and bony hand.
