IS BERNIE SANDERS'S 2020 SUPPORT SLIPPING? A SURVEY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE VOTERS SAYS YES

Voters in a state that helped launch Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders's 2016 bid for the presidency may not be "feeling the Bern" as much two years later, now that it's rumored the senator could run again in 2020.
Sanders trails Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren as well as former Vice President Joe Biden in a survey of New Hampshire voters' preferred 2020 candidate, according to new polling from Suffolk University released on Wednesday. Sanders won over just 13 percent of New Hampshire voters, while Warren was preferred by 26 percent of the respondents and Biden by 20 percent. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker fell below Sanders with 8 percent, California Senator Kamala Harris and former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick each got 4 percent, and former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand received 2 percent each.
The poll was administered more than two years ahead of 2020's general election, but the results suggest that a state that once considered Sanders their first choice for president is open to other options when presented with a slate of potential Democratic contenders.
For someone who hasn't visited New Hampshire in over a year, Joe Bidens popularity is strong and steady," David Paleologos, Suffolk University Political Research Center's Boston director said. "What is perhaps surprising is that Bernie Sanderswho secured 60 percent of the New Hampshire Democratic primary vote in 2016is retaining less than half of that support two years later."

(8,200 posts)Someone who is more attuned with the those who are the future of the nation. I am just tired of the same old crap from a pack of worn out geezers. Trump is just a nasty, slimy old bastard I wouldn't shake hands with. Lordy, I think half the Senate is chaired by senile old cranks with constipation issues. Just what we need some old bastard that needs his grand kid's help plugging in the computer.

(2,275 posts)... to its underlying class divisions and rigged economy. Give the man a break. He has moved us forward, just as Hilllary moved us forward on the same and orher issues. The primaries among Democrats were far more mutually supportive between those two than what the Republicans showed. Let's honor both Hillary and Bernie and the issues they stand for by not succumbing to this provocation.
This discussion seems engineered to provoke, not to enlighten.

(60,968 posts)It did not include either Warren or Biden. I think even O'Malley had dropped out -- and Chaffee and Webb never gained traction. It was Clinton or Sanders.
I suspect that if Warren were an option, she likely would have taken a huge chunk of his vote and maybe some (but less) of Clinton's.

(10,578 posts)I don't think Patrick will run if Joe Biden does. Eric Holder seems likely to run regardless.
In 2016 O'Malley dropped out after Iowa.

(10,943 posts)...surprised Bernie is fading... but I am surprised Biden and Warren are in the lead. I have nothing against them, but I was predicting all the bigger names would fade. Maybe voters will want the security of someone familiar. Oh well, it is still too early to tell...

(60,968 posts)can win or even just do unexpectedly well and they will then get some coverage. If that person or people are impressive, they will suddenly be much higher than now.
I suspect that now it is mostly name recognition. Think of how many people know who Biden and Sanders are vs say Harris, Gilibrand, etc. Even here, in a very political group, I suspect most of us are not sure who we are for.

(24,486 posts)One can only hope. I want an actual member of the Democratic Party as the nominee, a person who has run as a Democrat in their every election despite the imperfection of the party.
I will vote for Sanders if he is the nominee of the Democratic Party, but in his running for the nomination, even as a senior citizen I will answer phones, knock on doors, and donate what little money I can to stop him from winning it.
