Iowa governor to sign 6-week abortion ban

Source: The Hill

BY MAX GREENWOOD - 05/04/18 03:17 PM EDT

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) said on Friday that she planned to sign a measure that would ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, setting up the strictest limitations on abortion in the U.S.

In a statement, Reynolds, a Republican, said that she would sign the bill in her formal office in the Iowa state capitol.

The legislation is certain to prompt legal battles. Shortly after Reynolds' office announced the governor's intent to sign the so-called "heartbeat" bill, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland said that it would file a lawsuit seeking to block the bill.

"I am here to tell her, Gov. Reynolds, if you sign this bill, Planned Parenthood will see you in court," Suzanna de Baca, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, said in a statement. "We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients because Iowa will not go back."

and they'll be in court using 6 weeks as a line in the sand

If you know you're pregnant, more than 6 weeks have elapsed.

The old joke about Woodstock seems apropos: If you remember it - you weren't there.

To argue a case all the way through the Supreme Court? A million bucks? Two million bucks? All at the tax payers expense... this is the worst king of malpractice of government officials. Too bad the Bible thumpers don’t understand what social services they are sacrificing in this con game.

The Pugs craft silly legislation that don't last a minute in court. When the legislation is struck down, the news gets played ad nauseum in the wingnut echo chamber, the shock jocks railing against "activist judges." Outraged wingnuts flock to the polls, voting against anything perceived as "liberal." Rinse and repeat.

See how that works?

But hey, this is an midterm election year and there's no turning the ship now.
So might as well order "full speed ahead" - who cares if there's an iceberg, that'll be after the elections.

Is it even possible to pinpoint the length of a pregnancy that accurately? How are these laws worded? 6 weeks from when? Conception? I don’t get it. It’s not like there’s a little indicator down there that pops out and has little “week” marks on it! “Looky there, nurse! This one’s only at 5 and a half!”

that I'm from and live in Iowa but Democrats just don't seem to vote in mid-terms. During the 2014 mid-terms I went door to door for the Iowa Democratic Party to try to convince registered Democrats to get out and vote and order absentee ballots. We all know how that election turned out.

Iowa's brain drain. Iowa has good schools and universities, but the problem is that there aren't a lot of jobs in Iowa where a college graduate can use their degree in any meaningful way, or find a good paying job, unless they go into agriculture or a related field. So educated people leave the state and mostly working class, older, and rural whites, which strongly tend to vote Republican remain. I live in the Des Moines metro and I know some educated, cultured, and Democratic-leaning people, but they are far outnumbered by conservatives.

know if the pregnancy is viable. I was examined at about 2 months with my first pregnancy and the doctor said to me "you are going to miscarry". I miscarried twice at about 2 mo. Later on a doctor read in my records 2 spont abortions, which is what they call miscarriages. He yelled at me for having illegal abortions. Too stupid to even read the spont which stood for spontaneous.
