Blankenship surging on eve of West Virginia Senate primary
Source: Politico
There is growing concern among Republicans that Don Blankenship, a bombastic coal baron who has spent time in prison, is surging ahead of Tuesdays West Virginia Senate primary and a last-minute campaign is underway to stop him.
As the tight contest hurtles to a close, four Republicans said theyd reviewed polling conducted in recent days showing Blankenship, who spent a year in jail following the 2010 explosion at his Upper Big Branch Mine that killed 29 workers, moving narrowly ahead of his more mainstream GOP rivals, Rep. Evan Jenkins and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.
The Republicans cautioned that the surveys, designed to offer a snapshot of the race, were conducted over a brief period of time and may be overstating Blankenships support. Still, Blankenships rivals and other Republicans are alarmed. Many are convinced that a Blankenship win, coming just months after the disastrous Alabama Senate race, would destroy the partys prospects of defeating Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin in November.

(17,911 posts)offsetting a win somewhere else. On the road to winning back the Senate, not only do we need to win seats away from the Rethugs, we've got to keep the seats we already have...all of them.

(18,623 posts)To imagine Don Blankenship, the least savvy public persona to wander out of prison for homicidal neglect of miners getting a majority vote from the very people he exploited and chained to the company store, just shatters my sense of how the world works in a society not on PCP.
What happened to workers uniting against the corporate machine? Instead the good people of WV seem to have accepted their place as unlubricated disposable cogs.
Please Mr Blankenship, may I have another?

(58,785 posts)Weaklings and fools on the left lost us the 2016 election. They "woe-is-us-ed" and "complained-complained-complained" the nation over to the Republicans, who, for all their enormous faults do not share this potentially fatal one. Their politicians are betraying scum, but they win because they turn out to vote.
