U.S. job openings hit record high, more workers quitting

Source: Reuters

U.S. job openings surged to a record high in March, suggesting that a recent slowdown in hiring was probably the result of employers having difficulties finding qualified workers.

The monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS, released by the Labor Department on Tuesday also showed more workers voluntarily quit their jobs in March, a sign of confidence in the labor market that economists believe will help to push up wage growth this year.

The JOLTS report bolsters expectations that inflation will accelerate and keep the Federal Reserve on track to raise interest rates at least two more times this year. The U.S. central bank hiked interest rates in March.

“The labor market is hot and getting hotter by the day so central bankers need to continue to take the punch bowl away because higher wages and greater inflation are on the way,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at MUFG in New York.

If they start now, maybe in a couple years, they will have a "qualified" workforce who they can be proud of rather than trying to "buy instant cheap labor" from elsewhere.

...growing. I see the unemployment numbers, but still see vacant buildings. Plus, you have Ford announcing that they are no longer making cars due to poor sales.

Because of the assembly line and how boring the work became. Henry Ford was no saint to the average worker. Paid them squat for years, spied on them, tried to run their lives. Etc,etc,etc.............

they need to decriminalize pot once and for all. Pot stays in your system for weeks. They could have smoked some a month ago and it shows up.

I can tell you that a number of unemployed candidates that have been sitting in my database for months, are suddenly getting multiple job offers. Mostly QA/QC people, and manufacturing engineers. Unfortunately, not thru me.

I'm not about to give tRump credit for the phenomenon.

...and they have not had any trouble finding jobs. This does not seem like a new thing.

Now, if non degree jobs picked up, then that would be a change. But it seems like a lot of retail jobs are going away.
