WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Monday defended his efforts to help a Chinese telecommunications company that violated U.S. sanctions "get back into business, fast," despite criticism from Democrats and Republicans that the company poses a national security risk.
Mr. Trump over the weekend unexpectedly tweeted that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping were "working together" to give ZTE "a way to get back into business, fast," saying too many jobs in China were at stake after the U.S. government cut off access to its American suppliers.
The surprising overture to China marked a dramatic departure from Mr. Trump's rhetoric during the campaign, when he said he would no longer allow China to "rape our country" and steal U.S. jobs.
The U.S. Commerce Department last month blocked ZTE, a major supplier of telecom networks and smartphones based in southern China, from importing American components for seven years. The U.S. accused ZTE of misleading American regulators over sanctions against North Korea and Iran.

"The project will include a number of Trump-branded hotels, a golf course, and a residence. While the $500 million loan will not be directly allocated to any of the Trump-branded features, Beijings contribution of half the projects total operating budget ensures the success of the broader theme-park venture.
The Trump properties are considered flagship elements of the theme park, according to MNC marketing materials, and internal documents obtained by Agency France-Presse show Trumps sons have been directly involved in its planning.
Though negotiations began prior to Trumps election and his pledge to cease engaging in new business dealings with foreign governments, the project raises questions about the extent to which the Trump organization is dependent on Beijing amid contentious trade negotiations with the U.S."

(748 posts)I think that is the only thing that really matters to Trump.
He cares about who is buttering him up, making him fancy reception parties and acting relentlessly loyal. (And giving him money)

(7,402 posts)It benefits China, Trump and North Korea.
ZTE will again be suppliers to North Korea, breaking an important leg in the sanctions against North Korea. But this is only the tip of the iceberg on the goodies North Korea will receive in the summit with Trump. The final tab paid for by America will be huge.
